Russian Federation: Flash Floods - Jul 2012

Disaster description

Torrential rains during the night of 6 Jul 2012 caused severe flash floods in Russia's southern Krasnodar region, which killed 172 people and inured almost 4,000. 3,000 people had to be evacuated, and 5,500 residents lost their property completely in the area's worst natural disaster in decades. On 22 August 2012 in the village of Novomikhailovsky in Tuapsinsky district, the level of water in the river Nechepsukho rose after heavy rains caused by a cyclone, leading to the flooding of 6 streets and 600 houses (1,500 people affected) (Gov't of Russia, 22 Aug 2012).
