Saint Lucia: Infectious disease update

Ministry of Health, Wellness, Family Affairs, National Mobilization,

Human Services and Gender Relations February 7, 2011.

The Ministry of Health has increased surveillance for infectious disease and has up-scaled vector control activities given the recent trends post Hurricane Tomas.

As indicated previously (in our press release dated January 25, 2011), the Ministry of Health reminds all that we are still at risk for diseases such as dengue fever (transmitted by mosquitoes), Leptospirosis (transmitted by rats and other infected mammals)

Summary:

42,068 Swiss francs has been allocated from the IFRC's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 15 October 2010 to support the Saint Lucia Red Cross (SLRC) in delivering assistance to some 200 beneficiaries, as well as to replenish disaster preparedness stocks.

Emergency Humanitarian Aid for Flood Victims in Venezuela

1. Concerning the massive flood damage in Venezuela caused by recent heavy rains, the Korean government has decided to provide humanitarian aid worth 100,000 dollars.

?As of Dec. 15, the flood has killed 35 people and displaced 120,000, causing $50 billion worth of property damage.

2. The Korean government will provide relief supplies the Venezuelan government has requested, and also keep an eye on additional damage in Latin America suffering from severe flooding to ensure swift response in case humanitarian aid is needed.

CHF 42,068 (USD 44,194 or EUR 31,400) has been allocated from the IFRC's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Saint Lucia Red Cross in delivering immediate assistance to some 200 beneficiaries. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

Summary: For the past two weeks, Saint Lucia has been experiencing heavy rainfall, the culmination of which has resulted in flash flooding in the Dennery Quarter. Saint Lucia: Prime Minister King announces EC$500,000 to assist Dennery residents

Thursday, October 14, 2010 - Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Honourable Stephenson King has announced that the Cabinet of Minister on Wednesday October 13, approved half a million ($500,000) to assist Dennery residents who were affected by the recent floods.

Saint Lucia Red Cross comes to the assistance of Dennery residents

Monday 11 October 2010 - The Saint Lucia Red Cross in collaboration with health officials are working assiduously to address the health needs of Dennery residents who were affected by flooding last week.

Recognising that stagnant water is a potential source of diseases, the Red Cross has distributed hygiene kits to the affected residents.

Saint Lucia: Schools in Dennery reopen on Wednesday

Monday 11 October 2010 - Parents and guardians of students attending the Dennery Primary and Infant Schools and the Clendon Mason Secondary School in Dennery are being advised that classes will resume on Wednesday October 13.

The institutions have been closed ever since flooding associated with torrential rains dumped piles of mud and debris across the premises, last week.

The inclement weather also destroyed several school supplies and equipment.

Saint Lucia: Agricultural infrastructure hard hit says Dennery North MP

Friday, October 8, 2010 - Member of Parliament for Dennery North, Honourable Marcus Nicholas says the agriculture sector within his constituency was severely affected by last week's inclement weather.

Several farmers are now assessing the damage to their crops and livelihoods in the aftermath of landslides and torrential rains.
