HONDURAS: COPECO INSTALA SISMOGRAFO EN EL SECTOR DE MARCOVIA CHOLUTECA

Un equipo para monitoreo de movimientos tel=FAricos instaló COPECO en el sector de Marcovia, Choluteca, debido al incremento de actividad sísmica en la región Sur del país, misma que se encuentra bajo la influencia del llamado "cinturón de fuego del Pacifico".

Desde inicio del presente año, se ha registrado un aumento de movimientos sísmicos a menor escala en el Golfo de Fonseca, por lo que COPECO a través de su oficina regional, inició la coordinación con autoridades regionales para instalar el referido sismógrafo.

Caribbean Red Cross Program Transitions into Second Phase

A USAID/OFDA-supported Red Cross program to strengthen disaster preparedness in the Caribbean concluded its first phase in August and will begin phase two in October.

The program, "Readiness to Respond: Increased Disaster Preparedness through Enhanced Coordination and Community Awareness," is a joint effort between USAID/OFDA, the American Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and Caribbean Red Cross societies.

Latin American Countries Adopt the Incident Command System

Situation report: Honduras earthquake response

An earthquake measuring 7.1 struck the Atlantic coast of Honduras on May 28, 2009. Shortly after the quake, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance began formulating a response in cooperation with Action by Churches Together (ACT) International and members of the ACT Forum in Honduras and Central America.

PDA staff member and PC(USA) Mission Coworker Carlos Cardenas visited the area to do an assessment and to make recommendations on the assistance needed.

Honduras obtains IDB assistance for disaster risk management

Loan will bolster investments in prevention, mitigation and emergency response

Honduras will receive a $75 million credit line from the Inter-American Development Bank to support the implementation of an integrated strategy for managing the risk of natural disasters.

A first $19 million loan within the conditional credit line for investment projects (known as CCLIP) will finance efforts to reduce the losses occasioned by recurring natural hazards through investments in prevention, mitigation and emergency response actions.
