The act authorizes a total of $7.5 billion for fiscal years (FY) 2010 through 2014 to support programs for democratic, economic, and development assistance. The U.S. Department of State's (DOS) strategy report for providing civilian assistance outlines three key objectives:

- From July through early August 2008, monsoon rains and related flooding affected populations throughout Pakistan, killing 40 individuals and affecting an estimated 241,000 others, including approximately 175,000 people displaced from communities in North-West Frontier Province (NWFP). Floods also damaged or destroyed an estimated 12,000 houses, in addition to infrastructure, crops, and agricultural land.

On dit souvent qu'une image peut exprimer mille mots. Mais ce que j'ai vu, 'il n'y avait aucun mot pour le décrire.

WFP ramps up assistance to hungry in Pakistan

Pakistan, riven by political tensions in the last few days, has an ongoing need for food assistance which has deepened recently due to high food prices, conflict and natural disasters. In response, WFP is ramping up its programmes in 2009.

This year WFP aims to reach nine million beneficiaries in Pakistan, a country where 85 percent of the population live on an income of less than US$ 2 per day. Last year we reached 6.2 million.

As part of the scaling up of assistance, WFP last autumn launched an emergency operation to help 3.1 million people affected by high food prices.

The people cannot move anywhere else and so they need to face the challenges of their area. One way of being prepared before an earthquake comes, is by making sure that their buildings are safe.

Pakistan Earthquake 20 Feb 2009

- Around 8:45 AM (03:48 UTC) an Earthquake of magnitude 5.8 (Pakistan Meteorological Department) hit the northern areas of Pakistan Administered Kashmir (PaK) with the epicentre 95 km NE of Islamabad on the borderline of PaK. The depth of the earthquake was recorded to be 26 km (16.2 miles) at the epicentre.- According to State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) heavy jolts were felt in the northern districts of Pakistan Administered Kashmir: Poonch, Rawalakot, Bagh, Neelum and Muzaffarabad.

The jolts were also felt in Punjab, Hazara

Pakistan: Strong jolt triggers panic as houses collapse in Kashmir

ISLAMABAD, 22 February 2009 (IRIN) - Fear swept across many parts of Pakistan-administered Kashmir as an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit its capital, Muzaffarabad, and surrounding areas just after 9am local time on 20 February. "The epicenter of the quake was just across the Line of Control [dividing Pakistani and Indian-administered Kashmir] in Baramula," Chaudhry Qamar-uz-zaman, Director General of the Pakistan Metrological Office, told IRIN.

There were no reports of deaths, but damage was said to be widespread, particularly in the Neelum Valley area

Pakistan: Earthquake in Kashmir Valley Situation Report No. 1

OVERVIEW

- A medium intensity earthquake struck the Kashmir Valley near Pakistan-India border on Friday, 20th February 2009 at 0849 hrs in the morning.

- No death was reported due to the earthquake.

- Five girls were injured in a school at Abbaspur, district Poonch due to panicky.

- Two health facilities are partially damaged due to the earthquake.

- Neelum Valley road is blocked due to landslide at Chiliana, Muzaffarabad.

- According to State Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (SERRA), 2 houses are damaged and 3 persons
