HORN OF AFRICA FLOODS

Unusually heavy rains during the months of October and November have turned large parts of the Horn of Africa into flood disaster areas with loss of life, massive displacement, and loss of livelihoods and assets in particularly in Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia. Accumulated estimates from the three countries put the total number of affected people between 1, 5 and 1, 8 million. Emergency response has being mounted by Governments in the affected countries, UN agencies, NGOs and other humanitarian partners.

Support continues for Kyrgyzstan earthquake victims

Background:

At 2am on 26 December 2006, an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale shook the village of Kochkork and other towns around Issyk-kul in Kyrgyzstan. Its epicentre was in the Terskei Alatau mountains, 30 kilometres from Kochkork and 140 kilometres south-east of the capital, Bishkek. No one was killed but structural damage was widespread, with more than 6,000 houses and buildings in 12 villages damaged and 20 completely destroyed.

Situation

1. At 2 a.m. local time on 26 December 2006, an earthquake struck Kochkor area, Naryn region, some 140 km south-east of the capital Bishkek. Local reports indicated a magnitude of 5.5 in the Richter scale. The earthquake was also felt in neighboring Kazakhstan.

2. The UN Resident Coordinator in Bishkek immediately established contact with the Ministry of Emergency Situations. Preliminary information received by the Government indicate mainly damage
