Iran: Clean water to Qeshm island

Operation Mercy was able to install nine water tanks to provide the inhabitants of the island off the Iranian coast with clean drinking water.

After the severe earthquake in September last year, Operation Mercy has been helping villages on Qeshm with water tanks, since clean drinking water could no longer be obtained. About 8000 people now benefit from the water tanks on the island that was just recovering after the 2005 earthquake.

Hormozgan province in southern Iran is no stranger to disaster. After an earthquake in 2005 left a path of devastation across the province, another earthquake in September has caused additional damage to villages still struggling to recover.

With most aid going to the mainland, several villages on Qeshm Island have been left without clean drinking water, increasing the susceptability of disease. Operation Mercy is providing water tanks that will ensure clean water for more than 3,000 families. Village committees are erecting the foundations to ensure local participation.

Iran: Humanitarian aids to affected people of Qeshm Island

As a follow up of the earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale which recently shook Qeshm Island in Hormozgan province, IRCS relief workers are still in the scene and doing their utmost to respond the need of the affected people. In this respect, IRCS provincial branch of Hormozgan distributed 74,151 tins of tuna fish, 46,700 tins of canned beans, 40,920 kgs of rice, 10,445 kgs of sugar, 16,836 kgs of edible oil, 5,986 kgs of pulses, and 1,133 kgs of tea. Iran: Third quake quivers Qeshm Island

Tehran, Dec 2, IRNA - The third earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale hit suburbs of Qeshm Island in southern Hormuzgan Province at 01:28 hours local time on Friday (2158 GMT) Thursday night.

The seismological base of Tehran University's Geophysics Institute registered the tremor in an area measuring 26.81 degrees in latitude and 56.03 degrees in longitude.

There are no immediate reports of any damage or casualty.

Earlier in the day, the island was rattled by a 4.3-magnitude earthquake, which caused no casualty or damage to property.

Caritas addresses sanitation needs in quake-damaged Qeshm Island, Iran

Vatican City, 2 December 2005 - Caritas Internationalis has launched an appeal for more than US$200,000 to support earthquake-battered communities on Qeshm Island in southern Iran. On 27 November, an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck the island (population 123,000), killing at least 10 people, injuring 200, and damaging some 4,000 houses, 2,500 of which were completely destroyed. The villages of Tunban and Gavazin were among the worst hit, while considerable damages were also reported in the villages of Turian, Karevan, Kushe, Ziran, and Tomsenety.

New quake hits Qeshm island, southern Iran

An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale hit surrounding areas of Qeshm in the Persian Gulf in southern Iran on Monday evening following two killer quakes that hit the coastal area and its neighboring villages on Sunday.

Iran's seismological bases registered the tremor at 20:45 local time (17:15 GMT).

There are no reports of damage or casualties caused by this latest tremor.

Strong quake hits southern Iran

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake trembled the southern island of Qeshm in Hormozgan province on Monday afternoon at 13:53 pm local time (10:23 am GMT). The quake has reportedly lasted around 15 seconds and caused people to run out of their houses.

IRCS reports say there has been some damage to 17 villages at the destruction rate of 10% to 80%. Some 7 people have lost their lives and more than 39 are injured in the quake. Qeshm is the biggest island in an area of 1,500 square meters located in Persian Gulf.

Iran's schoolchildren practise for dreaded quakes

TEHRAN, Nov 29 (Reuters) - As soon as the siren rings, the girls dive for cover under their desks.

Schoolchildren went through their annual drills across Iran on Tuesday to prepare for an earthquake, a necessary exercise in a country criss-crossed with lethal faultlines and where tens of thousands of people have been killed in earthquakes.

"They teach us here how to react and we teach our parents," said 14-year-old Atefeh Ebrahimi.

Iran: Earthquake hits Gheshm Island

Geneva, 28 November, 2005 - A powerful earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale has hit southern Iran, killing at least 13 people. The earthquake struck Gheshm Island and the city of Bandar Abbas at 13:53 local time on Sunday morning. Gheshm Island is a tourist destination and home to some 120,000 people.

Aftershocks jolt Iran's Qeshm island, death toll rises to 10

Qeshm, Hormuzgan Prov., Nov 28, IRNA. The sixth aftershock shook this southern Iranian island in the Persian Gulf on Monday as death toll from a strong earthquake a day before rose to 10.

The new death toll came after the bodies of two more victims were found in the village of Ziranag which is one of the 12 worst-hit villages in the quake, Qeshm Governor Heydar Alishvandi said.

Relief workers bring help to Iran quake survivors

QESHM ISLAND, Iran, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Aid workers handed out blankets and food on Monday to thousands of people on the Iranian Gulf island of Qeshm left homeless by an earthquake which destroyed a dozen villages and killed at least 10 people.

Iran villagers shelter in tents after killer quake

TEHRAN, Nov 28, 2005 (AFP) - Iranian rescue workers handed out blankets, food and water Monday to survivors of a powerful earthquake on a Gulf island that killed 10 people and forced villagers to spend the night in tents.

Power was restored to the afflicted villages on the Gulf island of Qeshm after a blackout caused by the quake, which struck on Sunday with a force of about 6.0 on the Richter scale.
