The global cereal supply and demand situation has further tightened, with a downward revision of the 2006 world cereal production forecast and a projected increase in cereal utilization in 2006/07. At current forecast levels, the utilization would exceed production by 3.3 percent in 2006/07. Zimbabwe hospitals operate without doctors

MASVINGO - At least four hospitals in Zimbabwe's southern Masvingo province are operating without a single doctor in a vivid illustration of the collapse of the country's health delivery system.

Search for missing South African miner continues

JOHANNESBURG, March 11 (AFP) - Rescuers on Friday pressed on with a search for a missing miner trapped more than two kilometres underground in a gold pit, two days after a quake hit South Africa's mining heartland, a mine spokesman said.

"They are still looking for the missing guy," said James Duncan, spokesman for South Africa's fourth-largest gold producer DRDGold.

The miner was among a group of 38 men who were trapped in the pit in Stilfontein, some 160 kilometers (100 miles) southwest of Johannesburg, on Wednesday after the quake caused tunnels

South Africa: Earthquake victims receive support from North West Government

Premier Edna Molewa yesterday visited the Durban Roodepoort Deep Mine earthquake scene near Stilfontein in the North West Province. The earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale shook the Klerksdorp area, trapping miners underground who have since been evacuated.

Premier Molewa also visited the injured in hospital to give support and has assured that Government would help where it could, within its available resources.

The earthquake that has caused damage to a few residential flats in the area has left one person dead and another missing.

STILFONTEIN, South Africa, March 10 (AFP) - Rescuers on Thursday recovered the body of a miner from a deep gold pit after hauling to safety 36 others who were trapped underground after a quake hit South Africa's mining heartland.

The teams pressed on with a search for one miner still missing since the quake hit around noon on Wednesday, causing tunnels in the shafts to collapse at the DRDGold mine in Stilfontein, some 160 kilometers (100 miles) southwest of Johannesburg.

South Africa: NWPG at quake site

Premier Edna Molewa will today at 15:00 visit the Durban Roodepoort Deep Mine where an earthquake struck near Stilfontein in the North West Province. An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale shook the Klerksdorp area, trapping miners underground and has caused damage to a few residential flats in the area.
Molewa has sent her condolences to the family of the miner who died yesterday. Another is still unaccounted for. Rescue workers and mine workers who volunteered to assist in the rescue effort evacuated other trapped miners from underground.

An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale occurred at 2,400 meters below the surface at a mining area in Stilfontein and the two towns surrounding it, namely Klerksdorp and Orkney around midday on Wednesday 9 March 2005. The epicentre of the quake is located in the North West Province; some 200 km from Johannesburg.

Some 3,200 gold miners of DRD Gold working in the mine in Stilfontein were evacuated. 42miners were initially trapped due to rock falls, but media reports on the morning on 10 March indicate that only 12 are remaining and the search and rescue teams are making frantic

35 Stilfontein earth tremor casualties receiving treatment in NW hospitals

Klerksdorp, hospitals around the city and the nearby areas have since this afternoon been busy attending to victims of today's earth tremor that hit some part of the town and Stilfontein area in particular and registered around 6,5 on the rector scale. By 15h00 this afternoon, over 35 people have been injured and taken to the Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital complex for treatment. At the present moment we have no cases of fatal injuries but expect the situation to change as the day progress and reports flock in.
