Psychological support as a priority for disaster-stricken people

As a pilot programme, Relief and Rescue Organisation of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has implemented psychological support for the affected people who were traumatised by losing their relatives in Qazvin province, affected by a strong earthquake in June last year.

Ten countries discuss disaster management cooperation at Iran workshop

Experts from Iran and nine neighbouring countries will cooperate in identifying ways to reduce the risks posed by such natural disasters as drought and earthquakes, which can undermine development gains and worsen poverty.
They gathered at a recent workshop in Tehran, Iran, organized by UNDP in cooperation with the Disaster Task Force of the Iran's Ministry of Interior, to identify common needs and priorities. Participants came from Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

World Bank grants 225 million dollars for Iran's quake-hit areas

TEHRAN, Nov 9, 2002 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The World Bank will extend 225 million US dollars to Iran for the reconstruction and economic rehabilitation of areas affected by the June 22 earthquake, the state-run IRNA news agency reported on Saturday.

The World Bank will grant the credit to the departments of the Iranian Interior Ministry in the quake-hit zones -- the provinces of Qazvin, Zanjan and Hamedan.

The fund is provided within the framework of development and infrastructure projects, and the Iranian government

US to deliver new hygiene kits to Iran's quake victims

TEHRAN, Sept 9 (AFP) - The United States has agreed to dispatch about 12,000 new hygiene kits to Iran to replace the expired kits it sent for victims of a devastating June earthquake, a UNICEF official in Tehran said Monday.

"The USAID (United States Agency for International Development), a governmental agency, has agreed to send the new kits and a plane carrying the aid will arrive soon," said the official from the United Nations Children's Fund.

Iran - Qazvin, Zanjan, and Hamedan: Where psychological support is a need

Iran is a disaster-prone country and is often hit by earthquakes, floods, and droughts. On 22 June 2002, an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck northwestern Iran, destroying some parts of the provinces of Qazvin, Zanjan, and Hamedan. In all, 230 persons were killed, 1466 injured, 25,000 left homeless, and almost 100,000 people were affected; 9 villages were completely destroyed and another 204 badly damaged.

Kuwaiti Ambassador meets President of the IRCS

On 23 July, Kuwaiti Ambassador in Iran Majdi Ali Alzafiri met with President of the IRCS Dr. Ahmad Ali Noorbala in Tehran to donate USD 75,000 to the IRCS for the benefit of the victims of the recent earthquake, which struck the provinces of Hamedan, Qazvin, and Zanjan last month.

More than S$160,000 raised for disaster victims in Iran and China

Generous Singaporeans have yet again come forward to contribute and assist its neighbours in need. More than S$160,000 have been raised for victims of the earthquake in Iran and floods in China during the appeal launched in July. During the one-month appeal, more than S$100,000 was raised for the victims of floods in China and almost S$62,000 for victims of earthquake in Iran.
