Operational Developments:

Throughout 2002, the Federation's Delegation in Ankara continued its support of TRCS capacity building in organisational development, disaster preparedness and disaster response.

The International Federation also focused on preparations for establishing its Regional Delegation in Ankara to support and assist the National Societies and the Federation delegations in Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia and Turkey.

Ten countries discuss disaster management cooperation at Iran workshop

Experts from Iran and nine neighbouring countries will cooperate in identifying ways to reduce the risks posed by such natural disasters as drought and earthquakes, which can undermine development gains and worsen poverty.
They gathered at a recent workshop in Tehran, Iran, organized by UNDP in cooperation with the Disaster Task Force of the Iran's Ministry of Interior, to identify common needs and priorities. Participants came from Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Turkey: Catholic Relief Services response to Afyon earthquake

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake was registered at 9:15 a.m. local time (0815 GMT) on Sunday, February 3, 2002 and was centered in Bolvadin, in the province of Afyon, 250 km (155 miles) southwest of Turkey's capital, Ankara. Seventy-seven buildings collapsed in the town of Sultandagi and the effects were felt as far away as the capital.

Japan: Emergency assistance for earthquake disaster in Turkey

On February 8 (Fri), the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency assistance (grant aid) of 200,000 dollars to the Government of the Republic of Turkey, which has sustained great damage caused by an earthquake.

On February 3, an earthquake registering 6 on the Richter Scale hit Bolvadin county, Afyon province in the mid-west of Turkey (approx. 300 km southwest of Ankara), leaving 43 people dead, 318 injured, and 2,740 houses partially or completely destroyed. While conducting relief operations of its own, the Turkish Government therefore requested emergency assistance from Japan.

Indonesia has experienced the worst flooding in 30 years following a week of heavy rain at the end of January. Much of the capital, Jakarta, was under water and roads in and out of the city were impassable. UMCOR has sent an emergency response grant to the Methodist Church of Indonesia to provide food, water, and medicine. Once the waters have receded, people will need assistance repairing their homes and replacing household furnishings. Sunday morning's earthquake in Turkey was the first major test for Kizilay, the Turkish Red Crescent, since it revamped its disaster preparedness programme based on lessons learned from the 1999 earthquake operation. Kizilay's Afyon branch reached the affected region within seven minutes of the earthquake which measured 6 on the Richter Scale and struck an area 250 kms south-west of the capital, Ankara, killing 43 people and injuring 318, including 30 seriously. General Situation

1. An earthquake of a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale hit the province of Afyon in the Western Turkey at 09:11 hours local time on Sunday, 3 February 2002. The event was described as a superficial tremor which occurred at a depth of 5-6 km from the surface of the earth. Scientists said this fact contributed to the serious effect of the earthquake.

2. The epicenter of the quake was the Sultandagi sub-province of Afyon province 190 km southwest to the capital

Save the Children Emergency Section Statement: Turkey Earthquake

A series of earthquakes measuring up to 6.0 on the Richter scale hit Turkey on February 3rd, killing 44 people and injuring 318. The earthquakes occurred in Afyon Province, 190 km from the capital, Ankara, affecting Bolvadin, Eber village and Cay Town. Over 600 buildings, including many mud houses, were damaged or destroyed.
The government has responded well to the crisis, having learned lessons from the 1999 earthquakes which killed approximately 20,000 people. The local and national government have set up mobile kitchens and a mobile hospital. Search and Rescue teams are distributing
