Tzu Chi presents computers to El Salvador school

The volunteers from the U.S. Chapter of the Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation presented 108 computers to a school in El Salvador on Aug. 2 to realize the students' dream of learning through computers.

Computers equipped with Spanish software, along with 50 computer desks, were gathered by Tzu Chi volunteers in Miami where many Spanish-speaking people reside.

A ceremony marking the opening of the computer lab was held at the school located in the Great Love Village in Chanmico, the second community Tzu Chi has built in El Salvador for victims

Tzu Chi has completed the construction of Great Love Village for earthquake victims in El Salvador

(Extract)
In the beginning of 2001, El Salvador, the Central American country, was hit by two earthquakes measuring 7.6 and 6.6 on the Richter Scale. The death tolls reached 1,200, with 7,000 people injured, 220,000 homes destroyed, leaving about 1.2 millions people homeless.

After the earthquake, Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation volunteers from Taiwan and U.S.A. visited the disaster area five times to distribute relief supplies and provide free medical services. Approximately 35,750 people benefited from the food distribution

As part of the Program of Prevention, Emergency and Rehabilitation (PER), the Risk Management Network in which World Vision actively participates, held a vital meeting to revise the proposed Law of Prevention and Mitigation of Risks and Disasters in El Salvador.
Lidia Castillo, director of the Center of Protection for Disasters (CEPRODE) said, "We trust that with this law there can be management with a vision of risk, and that at the same time generate development projects in the communities, based on the mitigation of the risks."
