Tanzania: Quake Victims Get Relief

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - The Tanzanian government has announced relief aid for the 6,082 victims of an earthquake that struck the District of Rungwe a month ago.
Indications from the Disaster Management Unit at the Prime Minister's Office in Dar es Salaam are that most of the displaced people need shelter and blankets.

Relief materials due in Rungwe District in Mbeya region by the end of the week will include 870 tents, 5,000 blankets and medical supplies.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has already donated 2,400 blankets to the earthquake victims.

Situation

This report summarises the information received from the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Tanzania.

1. According to the report from the Office of the Prime Minister, the worst hit district was Nkansi, in Rukwa Region. In Nkansi, several aftershocks were felt during the day of 2 October, after the first powerful earthquake. One death and several injuries have been reported.

Tanzania: no casualties, little damage from quake despite force

DAR ES SALAAM, Oct 3 (AFP) - A strong earthquake that struck southwestern Tanzania claimed no casualties or significant damage even though it measured 6.6 on the Richter scale, police said Tuesday.

"So far there are no casualties. We have reports of tremors from many parts, some houses have opened up cracks, but nobody was hurt," Rukwa regional police commander Lameck Kebacho told AFP in a telephone interview from the southwestern Tanzanian town of Sumbawanga on Tuesday.

Situation

1. A powerful earthquake occurred around the Kipili peninsula of Lake Tanganyika in the Rukwa region, some 960 km west of the capital, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania on Monday, 2 October at 5:25 hours local time (02:25 GMT). According to the United States Geological Survey and the Swiss Seismological Service, the earthquake measured 6.6 on the Richter scale. The preliminary report shows that the epicentre was situated at latitude 7.9 degrees south and longitude 30.5 degrees east.

Earthquake hits southwest Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM, Oct 2 (AFP) - A powerful earthquake hit southwestern Tanzania early Monday but there were no immediate reports of casualties, the meteorological department here said.

"Fairly strong tremors were monitored at around 5:30 a.m. (0230 GMT). Some buildings were shaking, but so far we have no report of damage," Tanzania's acting director general of meteorology Martin Lukando told AFP.

The earthquake shook buildings in the Rukwa region, he added. It measured 6.6 on the Richter scale.
