World Bank Approves $404 Million to Support Management of Natural Disasters in Mexico

WASHINGTON, December 8, 2000-The World Bank yesterday approved a $404 million loan to support a wide-ranging initiative by the Government of Mexico to reduce the country's vulnerability to the impact of natural disasters, and to support rapid recovery when they occur.

Mexico's Quake Leaves 2 Dead

MEXICO CITY (Aug. 10) XINHUA - There have been two dead due to a 7.0 degree earthquake on the Richter scale Wednesday morning in Michoacan state, western Mexico.

Michoacan authorities said Thursday that a three-year-old minor died after a fence fell on him, and a 62-year-old man suffered heart stoppage caused by the quake.

There were also material damages and four persons were injured owing to the quake which revived panic among Mexicans who recalled the 1985 one that left thousands dead and great material damage.

Strong quake shakes Mexico City

MEXICO CITY, Aug 9 (AFP) - A strong earthquake shook Mexico City and parts of western Mexico early on Wednesday, leaving one person dead of a heart attack and another injured by a collapsing wall.

Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) said the quake measured 7.0 on the open-ended Richter scale, while the US National Earthquake Information Center gave an estimate of 6.4.

The SSN said the quake occurred at 6:42 a.m. (1142 GMT) and had its epicenter in the state of Michoacan, along the Pacific Coast, 360 kilometers (220 miles) west of the capital. It said

1. An earthquake struck in Mexico on 9 August 2000 at 11:41 GMT. Its epicenter was at latitude 18.19 N and longitude 102.30 W with the depth of 33 km (near 48 km/30 miles west of the coastal town of Lazaro Cardenas in the state of Michoacan, some 380 km/240 miles southwest of the capital). Its magnitude was 6.4 on the Richter scale (Source: United States Geological Survey, its website, http://quake.wr.usgs.gov).
