1. The present report has been prepared pursuant to General Assembly resolution 46/182 of 19 December 1991, in which the Assembly requested the Secretary-General to report annually to it and to the Economic and Social Council on the coordination of humanitarian assistance, Council resolution 1995/56 of 28 July 1995, in which the Council requested the Secretary-General to submit a comprehensive report on humanitarian assistance, and subsequent resolutions.

Taiwan earthquake victims roused from political lethargy

TAIPEI, March 18 (AFP) - Irate victims of Taiwan's devastating earthquake five months ago emerged from the temporary shelters where they are still housed Saturday to vote in the presidential election.

Anger at not being able to move into permanent homes has raised the awareness of many people previously disinterested in politics, Chen Hui-tse, head of the September 21 Victim Alliance support group told AFP.

China's Red Cross Receives 103 Million Yuan Donation 1999

BEIJING (Jan. 21) XINHUA - The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) received 103 million yuan (12.4 million U.S. dollars) in overseas donations in 1999 to benefit more than two million disaster victims, according to a RCSC official.

The funds donated by foreign countries, as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan, were spent on disaster-relief goods such as rice, medicines, winter clothing and quilts, Wang Lizhong, vice president of the RCSC, told the press today.

China provides pre-festival aid to disaster-hit areas

Beijing (dpa) - The Chinese government and the Red Cross this week doled out relief aid to boost flagging morale among millions of people affected by natural disasters in the past year, officials said on Friday.

The aid was dispatched as Chinese prepared for the Lunar New Year celebration in February.

China's Red Cross Society on Friday dispatched four teams to distribute some 1.5 million yuan (181,000 dollars) worth of meat, flour and cooking oil to disaster-stricken areas of Qinghai, Shaanxi, Hebei, Shanxi, Zhejiang, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Tibet, a Red Cross

Two quakes rock Taiwan

TAIPEI, Dec 7 (AFP) - Two earthquakes with one measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale jolted Taiwan Tuesday but no casualties were immediately reported, the Seismology Centre said.

The first quake hit at 2:14 a.m. (1814 GMT Monday), with the epicenter located 26.5 kilometers (14.4 miles) east of Ilan city and 101.1 kilometers below the earth's surface.

The second tremor with a magnitude of 4.4 struck at 05:34 p.m. (0934 GMT).

Its epicenter was located 17.9 kilometers north of the eastern Hualien city and 15.1 kilometers below the earth's serface.

Strong quake rocks central Taiwan

TAIPEI, Nov 17 (AFP) - A strong earthquake measuring 5.2 on the open-ended Richter scale jolted central Taiwan Wednesday, the Seismology Center said, but no casualties or damage were immediately reported.

The tremor struck at 03:35 p.m. (0735 GMT), with its epicenter 14.8 kilometers (9.2 miles) south of the central Taichung city and 8.9 kilometers below the earth's surface.

Central Taiwan was the epicenter of a September 21 quake, which left 2,400 dead, 11,000 injured and 100,000 homeless.

Fresh quakes hit Taiwan

TAIPEI, Nov 15 (AFP) - Two strong earthquakes struck Taiwan Monday sparking fears the island, which expereienced a devastating tremor in September, might be hit by another major quake the way Turkey was last week.

One quake measuring 5.2 on the open-ended Richter scale rocked southern Taiwan at 03:25 p.m. (0735 GMT), sending people running on to the streets and forcing school children into shelters.

The Seismology Center located the epicenter at 8.8 kilometers (5.46 miles) east of the Chiayi city in southern Taiwan.

Strong aftershocks jolt Taiwan

TAIPEI, Nov 4 (AFP) - Two strong aftershocks including one with a magnitude of 5.0 rocked Taiwan Thursday, following two fatal earthquakes which respectively hit central and southern parts of the island in September and October, the Seismology Center said.

The tremor, which struck at 05:34 a.m. (2134 GMT), was located 27.9 kilometers (17.3 miles) southwest of Ali mountain in southern Chiayi county.

The second aftershock hit at 08:48 a.m. (0048 GMT), with its epicenter located two kilometers (1.24 miles) east of Chiayi city.

Taiwan spared casualties in latest quake but fears heightened

TAIPEI, Nov 2 (AFP) - Terrified Taiwanese fled from their homes for the third time in six weeks early Tuesday as the island was again rocked by a powerful earthquake.

But the quake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale caused minimal damage, unlike the two previous temblors which left more than 2,400 dead, 11,300 injured and 100,000 homeless.

Although the latest tremor was felt all over the island, damage reports were limited to power cuts and a damaged bridge in the eastern counties of Taitung and Hualien.

Powerful earthquake rocks Taiwan

TAIPEI, Nov 2 (AFP) - An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale rocked Taiwan early Tuesday, the seismology centre said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties. "We have not received any fatalities report as of now," a rescue centre official said.

The tremor was registered at 1:53 a.m. (1753 GMT Monday), with its epicentre at 45 kilometres (nearly 28 miles) northeast of Chengkung town on the eastern part of the island and 30 kilometres (19 miles) under the sea.

Another quake hits Taiwan

TAIWAN -- Another earthquake rocked Taiwan on Oct. 22, causing building damage, power outages, and injuring approximately 200 people. Last week's tremor added to the destruction already faced by many Taiwanese. In ongoing efforts, CWS, in partnership with the Presbyterian Church of Taiwan (PCT), is providing outreach, aid, and pastoral care in the three worst affected counties, and is helping to provide temporary housing. Over the next four years, CWS will be assisting PCT in the construction of 200 homes.

Massive aftershocks continue to jolt Taiwan

TAIPEI, Oct 23 (AFP) - Terrified residents in southern Taiwan set up camp outdoors as massive aftershocks continued to rock the island Saturday, a day after hundreds of people were injured in an earthquake.

Friday's tremor, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale and centered near southern Chiayi city, struck a month after the island's worst ever quake in central Taiwan killed 2,405.

Hundreds of people set up a tent village in the Chiayi baseball stadium, and people wore helmets to a local temple festival for fear of further quakes, local television showed.

Hundreds injured as earthquake rocks Taiwan

TAIPEI, Oct 22 (AFP) - Hundreds of people were injured when a powerful earthquake rocked southern Taiwan Friday, leaving a trail of damaged buildings, fires and cut telephone lines in Chiayi city.

There were no reports of fatalities following the tremor which measured 6.4 on the Richter scale and came just a month after the island's worst quake in living memory.

The strong earthquake, which struck at 10:19 a.m. (0219 GMT), sent people fleeing in panic from swaying homes, offices and classrooms.
