COLOMBO, July 28 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Eight years after the end of a bloody civil conflict, Sri Lanka is on a war footing once again. This time all available resources have been pitched against a pesky and increasingly deadly foe: the dengue-carrying mosquito.

The Action Plan to Control the Dengue Epidemic prepared by WHO representatives, who arrived in the island, will be implemented. It will control Dengue by 50 percent within four weeks, Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senarathne said.

Description of the disaster

A total of 103,114 suspected dengue cases have been reported to the Epidemiology Unit, Sri Lanka from all over the island for the last 7 months in the year of 2017 with over 296 deaths. The trend diagram below clearly shows the outbreak proportions dengue is taking in the year 2017 in comparison to each year from 2010 to 2017. The current outbreak is predominantly due to Dengue Fever Virus Type 2 (DEN-2), to which the population has become susceptible due to immunological mechanisms.

Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development has taken steps to implement a joint mosquito prevention program in fisheries harbor premises in parallel to the national Dengue prevention program.

Accordingly, the program, organized by the Ceylon Fisheries Harbours Corporation was commenced at 20 fisheries harbors today on the instructions of Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.

An awareness program for fishermen and their families on keeping the fisheries harbours free from mosquitoes was also held.

Today I joined Sri Lankan Minister of Foreign Affairs Karunanayake to announce the Australian Government will provide life-saving support through the World Health Organization (WHO) to help combat a severe dengue outbreak in Sri Lanka.

Dengue is an insidious virus that emerges quickly when the conditions are right and in its severe form, it can be fatal. According to WHO, 50 to 100 million infections occur each year in over 100 countries – putting almost half the world's population at risk.

Cabinet of Ministers this week approved a joint proposal made by Minister Faizer Musthafa and Minister Sagala Rathnayake to implement several immediate steps for the prevention of irregular waste disposal in Colombo and suburbs and Dengue prevention.

From 1 January to 7 July 2017, the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health (MoH) Sri Lanka reported 80 732 dengue fever cases, including 215 deaths. This is a 4.3 fold higher than the average number of cases for the same period between 2010 and 2016, and the monthly number of cases exceeds the mean plus three standard deviations for each of the past six months. Based on sentinel site surveillance for the past seven years the expected peak months of May to July coincides with the south-western monsoon which commences in late April.
