Minister of Health Dr. Rajitha Senarathne said that steps were being taken to eliminate Dengue and the number of Dengue patients is reducing daily.

He said the Dengue ward at National Hospital was closed from 7th August. The additional wards at Negombo Hospital which were taken over to admit dengue patients have also been given back.

Being able to control the Dengue Epidemic in a very short time is an achievement said the minister addressing a Dengue Prevention Program at Waters Edge, Battaramulla yesterday (8th Aug.)

03/08/2017 – Colombo, Sri Lanka: As the dengue epidemic continues to claim lives in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society in partnerships with the International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has increased activities aimed at combating dengue epidemic in the island. As of now over 327 people have lost their lives while over 119, 773 have contracted the disease.

Colombo, 27 July 2017 – Stressing on preventive measures, Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization today said increased awareness and action by people to rapidly eliminate mosquito breeding sites and protect against mosquito bite, are key to arresting further spread of dengue in the island nation.

“An intense and large scale response has been launched against dengue. Vector control campaigns are being scaled up and capacities of hospitals increased to detect and treat the affected people,” Director General Health Services, Dr J. M.W. Jayasundara Bandara, said.

Another Dengue eradication programme, planned jointly by Ministry of Education and Ministry of Defence in parallel with the ongoing Presidential Task Force on Dengue control got underway on Friday (28th July), states Army media sources. 791 Sri Lanka Army personnel together with school students, teachers, parents and other volunteers joined this three day anti-dengue programme.

This programme carried out across the country will see schools, public spaces and most vulnerable places get cleaned of mosquito breeding places.

Under the three-day island-wide dengue prevention program commenced from yesterday (27th July) nearly 35, 720 premises in Western Province were inspected and 330 of them were prosecuted for maintaining possible dengue breeding places.

This three-day program was initiated by the Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine on the instructions of Minister Dr. Rajitha Senarathne to clean the school and public institution premises. About 1, 200 groups of officials had been deployed for the inspections.
