Geneva, 12 May 2017 – Following confirmation by the DRC Ministry of Public Health of an Ebola outbreak in the country, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance stands ready to support the Government’s efforts to bring the epidemic under control.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) declared a suspected Ebola outbreak in Likati Health Zone in the far north of the country on 9 May. As of today, 11 suspected cases including three deaths have been recorded.

Red Cross staff and volunteers are ready to respond and support local communities to stop the Ebola outbreak in DRC.

IFRC has today released just over 199,000 Swiss francs to support the community-level efforts of the Red Cross of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Le 9 mai 2017, l’OMS a été informée d’un groupe de cas d’une maladie inconnue avec des symptômes hémorragiques et des décès dans la zone de santé de Likati, dans la province du Bas-Uele au nord de la République démocratique du Congo (RDC), à la frontière de la République centrafricaine. Depuis le 22 avril, neuf cas suspects, avec trois décès, ont été signalés. Six sont actuellement hospitalisés.

Bangui, 15 May 2017 – The city of Bangassou in the Mbomou Prefecture (South-Eastern CAR) has been the scene of indiscriminate violence since May 13 when an assault was launched by unidentified gunmen on the Tokoyo district, which is mainly inhabited by the Muslim population. Massive displacement of population followed. Within hours, intense violence forced more than 3,000 people to flee their homes. At present, nearly 1,000 people are confined in the Mosque compound following threats of an imminent attack on them.

On 9 May 2017, WHO was informed of a cluster of undiagnosed illness and deaths including haemorrhagic symptoms in Likati Health Zone, Bas Uele Province in the north of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), bordering Central African Republic. Since 22 April, nine cases including three deaths have been reported. Six cases are currently hospitalized.

Suite à la confirmation d’un cas de fièvre Ebola dans la province du Bas-Uélé, en République Démocratique du Congo, l’organisation médicale ALIMA (The Alliance For International Medical Action) lance une intervention d’urgence. On 9 May, WHO was informed of a cluster of undiagnosed illness and deaths including haemorrhagic symptoms in Likati Health Zone, Bas Uele Province in the north of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), bordering Central African Republic.

On 11 May, the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo informed WHO that of five laboratory samples tested, one tested positive for Ebola virus at the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB) laboratory in Kinshasa. Additional laboratory samples are currently being tested.
