18 May 2017 – A race against the clock has begun to contain an outbreak of Ebola in a remote northern area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) said today.

Twenty cases of Ebola have been reported in the DRC's Bas Uele Province – near the vast country's border with the Central African Republic – two have been confirmed by laboratory tests and three people have died so far, the agency says.

  • Congolese Ministry of Health, WHO, MSF and Alima are responding swiftly to the situation, with the deployment of experienced staff and equipment near the epicentre of the epidemic. A crisis cell has been activated in the field and additional Ebola experts from MSF and WHO will be deployed to DRC this week.

Cologne. Two years after the Ebola epidemic claimed more than 10,000 lives in West Africa, a renewed outbreak of the disease has been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Three people have died after contracting the deadly virus in the country’s north-eastern province of Bas-Uélé. Very few aid organizations are active in Bas- Uélé, which makes rapid international aid very difficult. Just like the World Health Organization, Malteser International now supports local health facilities in the province to prevent further spread of the virus and loss of lives.

Ebola has resurfaced in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), killing three people and infecting up to 17 others since April 22, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced this week. _Foreign Policy_ reports that the outbreak, which was discovered in the northern province of Lower Uele, is so far “isolated, remote, and small” and unrelated to the 2014-16 Ebola epidemic in West Africa, which killed over 11,300 people in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone.
