DAKAR, May 25 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo could spread to the neighbouring Central African Republic, where militia violence has forced thousands of people to flee across the border, the World Health Organization said on Thursday.

Two cases of the virus have been confirmed by the WHO in Congo's remote northeastern Bas-Uele province since early May. Four people have died so far among the 43 suspected and confirmed cases.

On 11 May 2017 the Democratic Republic of the Congo notified the World Health Organization (WHO) of an outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Likati health zone, Bas Uele Province, in the northern part of the country. As of 20 May, 37 cases of suspected Ebola and four deaths had been reported. The risk to public health from this outbreak is currently assessed as being high at the national level, moderate at the regional level, and low at the global level.

Going to the epicenter of an Ebola outbreak is not easy – you need to mentally prepare. In fact, when I informed my colleagues in Kinshasa that I was going to the epicenter of the outbreak, I could see the apprehension on their faces. Fortunately, we have a clear office protocol in place, and we make sure that staff who go to an active zone have an individual protective kit, no matter how far or close they are to the outbreak area.

State authorities in South Sudan closed part of their border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo last week in an effort to prevent the spread of the deadly Ebola outbreak, declared by the World Health Organization in a remote, northern part of the DRC two weeks ago.

The WHO has confirmed that four people have died from the disease in the DRC. Lino Utu, deputy governor of Tambura state, said the movement of people and goods between the two countries at the border town of Ezo had been restricted until further notice.

FLOODS AFFECT OVER 5,000

Floods and violent winds have killed three people, injured 18 others and destroyed more than 750 houses across the country since the start of May. Overall, 5,129 people have been affected in several localities in the country’s East and South-Western regions. The National Emergency Response Council has provided food and basic household items to the affected families.

May 18, 2017 (YAMBIO) – The Government Gbudue, one of South Sudan’s newly states, has formed a task force to monitor an Ebola disease outbreak.

The state health minister, Hussein Enoka said the task force, which comprises of other health partners, is mandated to monitor the outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The taskforce, comprising of 17 members selected from various health institutions, will monitor and report Ebola related cases.
