BACKGROUND

When fighting broke out in Mali in 2012, thousands of people fled the country and crossed into neighboring countries. Thousands crossed into Niger, 80% of them being women and children. These persons required among other assistance, urgent access to healthcare.
In the three camps of Tillaberi region, the 2 “Refugee Hosting Areas” of Intikane and Tazalit and for urban refugees in Niamey, access to health care was facilitated.

  • The U.N. estimates that some 11.3 million people throughout the Sahel remain food insecure, while approximately 1.5 million children are at risk of severe acute malnutrition. Although pockets of food insecurity and malnutrition will likely persist until at least the arrival of harvests in October, overall food security conditions in the region remain stable, according to the USAID-funded Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET).

Highlights

  • As of 8 July and further to WFP assessment, an estimated 13,487 people will need assistance in Diffa region (including 5,181 refugees and 3,520 returnees who have crossed the border into Niger from Nigeria and an additional 4,786 host families who are supporting refugees and returnees) . This follows the declaration of a state of emergency in three federal states in neighbouring Nigeria early May.

In Syria, the government military continued its offensive on opposition-controlled Qusayr, a strategic city in Homs province connecting the capital to the Mediterranean coast. Humanitarian agencies expressed alarm over the fate of thousands of civilians still trapped in the city. The UN estimates that over 6.8 million people are in need of humanitarian aid in Syria. While an estimated 5 million people are internally displaced, the number of Syrians registered or awaiting registration in host countries has surpassed 1.6 million.

Ceux-ci sont pris en charge dans un centre de traitement du choléra (CTC) mis en place par les autorités sanitaires avec le soutien de MSF-Suisse. • The European Commission supports Niger in its efforts to improve food security for all Nigeriens and eradicate malnutrition. The country has made significant progress in reducing child deaths and has embraced a policy of free health care for under fives, but immense challenges remain to sustain these advances. At current rates, the population in Niger will continue to double every 20 years, outpacing economic growth as well as agricultural production.

NIAMEY , Apr 10 2013 (IPS) - About 20 communities in Tillabéri, west Niger, have been declared open defecation-free zones as across the country, very few people have access to proper sanitation.

The communities were part of a Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) project, launched in September 2010 in 32 villages in the region by the local office of the NGO Plan International.
