Burundi: Cholera Outbreak - Aug 2011

Disaster description

Since the beginning of August 2011, a cholera outbreak affected six provinces in Burundi. In general, cholera is endemic in Burundi, but because of the early start of the rainy season, the cholera cases increased. The situation became complicated in the affected districts cumulative number of cholera cases stood at 423, with nine new cases and two deaths. On 13 Aug, the ministry of health issued a disaster declaration. The Burundi Red Cross distributed hygiene kits and water and conducted community hygiene sessions and disinfection visits. By the end of the operation, the Ministry of Health declared an end to the epidemic, with no more cholera cases reported. (IFRC, 21 Mar 2012)
