Cholera hits Chiredzi

A cholera epidemic has swept accross Chiredzi district in the southern part of the country with at least a dozen people having been reportedly hospitalized during the past week.

Health officials in Masvingo said that they were still battling to contain the epidemic which claimed two lives in the Boli area last year.

Red Cross works with communities in Zimbabwe to improve water access

What a difference a year makes. Last year on World Water Day, the Red Cross water and sanitation programme in Chivi district, south-east Zimbabwe hadn’t even started. This year, the region has 50 new water points, 180 trained community health volunteers and 3,000 families now have access to clean water.

Beitbridge Cholera Outbreak Report 17 March 2013

There are 2 laboratory confirmed cases of cholera reported in Zimbabwe. One was reported from Shashe clinic in Beitbridge District, Matebeland South Province on the 5th of March 2013. The patient had visited South Africa, Mussina 4 days before falling ill. Three other suspected cholera case tested negative and we are still awaiting results from other 2 sample collected on 16th. There has been 2 confirmed cases of cholera in Mussina, one of which is a Zimbabwean national with a refugee status who had visited Zimbabwe prior to falling ill.

The African Water Facility Increases Access to Water Supply and Sanitation, Fights Cholera in Zimbabwe

Funded by the African Water Facility (AWF) to the amount of US $3 million, the project designed to rehabilitate the water supply and sewerage systems in Chitungwiza will be handed over today to the Municipality of Chitungwiza, following the completion of the construction works.

  • Typhoid fever outbreak reported in Chitungwiza

  • 4610 malaria cases and no deaths reported

A. General Context

On 3 May 2012, an outbreak of cholera was reported in Chiredzi district.

Since 10 October 2011, an outbreak of typhoid fever has been reported in Harare City. The disease spread to other provinces.

Since week 15 malaria weekly cases reported have been declining.

Chitungwiza city reported a typhoid case in week 27.

Tzu Chi Foundation provide ten temporary classrooms in Zimbabwe

Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation from Taiwan has effected a shipment of materials for the construction of ten temporary classrooms to improve learning condition. As in Epworth School, Zimbabwe, teachers and students were studying in tents, or under the shade of trees. Without desks and chairs, children sit on the ground to learn and lie on the big stone to write.

Zimbabwe: DREF Final Report - Cholera (MDRZW005)

Summary: CHF 226,353 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 8 July 2011 to support the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society in delivering assistance to some 30,000 beneficiaries, and to procure and distribute emergency disaster response stocks.

The operation was initially planned to be implemented over three months, July to September 2011. However a three-month extension until December 2011 was granted to allow some delayed activities to be completed.
