Planners in Sri Lanka should do more to mitigate the effects of extreme weather, experts say. In 2012, 1.2 million people were affected by drought and over half a million by floods.

Sri Lanka: Drought Revised Emergency Appeal n° MDRLK004

This revised Emergency Appeal is being revised from CHF 1,070,504 to CHF 186,642 in cash, kind, or services to support the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) to assist 20,000 drought affected families (some 125,000 people). The operating timeframe is being revised from 18 months to slightly over five months, and will be completed by 9 April 2013. A Final Report will be available by 9 July 2013.

Changing Weather, Changing Fortunes

COLOMBO, Mar 12 2013 (IPS) - Sri Lanka has paused for breath after the extreme weather conditions last year that many associate with climate change.

The reservoirs had hit new lows after a dry spell. That has now changed. “Thank god the weather has helped, all the reservoirs are at spill level,” finance secretary P. B. Jayasundera announced last month. “It is a kind of a bonus.”

Cash grants towards livelihoods awarded to drought affected

21/01/2013 – Kurunegala, Sri Lanka: The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) supported by the International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has taken steps to assist 20,000 families in 7 districts that faced a severe drought situation during 2012 in rural Sri Lanka. The major intervention is to provide 10,000 rupee livelihood grant to 1,400 families. In the initial step, 200 families in Kurunegala District received this cash grant at a ceremony held at the SLRCS Kurunegala branch premises.

Floods, drought exacerbate vulnerability

MAMADUWA/COLOMBO, 11 January 2013 (IRIN) - Recent extreme weather in Sri Lanka is likely to intensify the vulnerability of the poorest living in the country’s hardest hit northern and eastern regions, experts warn.

The Northern, North Central, Eastern and Uva (in the southeast) provinces experienced weeks of heavy rains starting on 16 December.

Sri Lanka receives food from the WFP

The United Nations World Food Program(WFP) has agreed to provide Sri Lanka food items worth Rs.million 4,524 (US dollars 34.7 million)during the next two years.

WFP Resident Director Mads Lofvall handed over the related document Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa at the Ministry office yesterday. The financial assistance from January 1, 2013 to December 2014 is expected to cover maternal and child nutrition, food for those whose work involves risk, lunch for school children, benefitting a total of 325,000 per year.

Govt allocates over Rs. 370m to provide seed paddy to drought-affected farmers

The government has allocated over 370 million rupees to provide seed paddy free of charge to the farmers affected by the severe drought during the Yala season this year. The Treasury has granted Rs. 371.215 million to provide 291,657 bushels of seed paddy free of charge to the farmers who made claims of total losses of their harvest due to the drought.

A total land area of 58,319 hectares is estimated to be cultivated under this provision and it is projected to have 262,435 metric tons of paddy harvest which would approximately amount to Rs.8.4 billion.

Both Guatemala and Myanmar were affected by earthquakes during the reporting period. On 7 November, an earthquake of 7.2 magnitude struck the pacific coast of Guatemala, affecting more than 600,000 people followed by a second quake of 6.2 magnitude on 11 November. There were no immediate reports of major infrastructural damage caused by the second earthquake. The 6.8 magnitude earthquake which struck in Myanmar on 10 November, meanwhile, damaged infrastructure but the full extent of the impact remains unclear.

War’s end threatens water supply in northern Sri Lanka

JAFFNA, Sri Lanka, Nov 10 2012 (IPS) - War is seldom good for anything, especially protracted conflicts like the one in Sri Lanka, which dragged on for over three decades and claimed between 80,000 to 100,000 lives.

But in a strange twist, this island nation’s civil war seems to have been a blessing in disguise for the precarious water resources in the northern Jaffna Peninsula, the region that bore the brunt of the fighting.

Since December last year Sri Lanka has been waiting for rains that finally arrived last month. Adding to the problems caused by the drought, Cyclone Nilam hit the island last week, affecting over 50,000 people and displacing close to 5,000 across the island.
