MUSHROOMS ADDRESS ISSUES OF FOOD SECURITY

The food security situation has much improved thanks to good harvests this year, but pockets of food insecurity are predicted among poor households who lost livestock last year in northern Badakhshan and the Wakhan Corridor. GHNI is now expanding its mushroom project, working with widows to yield income by providing more mushroom spores as a small business opportunity.

Reports of peace from Afghanistan

Caritas staff Tara D’Sousa and Nick Borthwick recently visited Bamyan province in Afghanistan, where Caritas supports an education and rural development programme. Despite recent violence in northeast Bamyan, Tara and Nick say their biggest impression of the areas they visited (Shaidan Valley and Yakawlang) was one of peacefulness and harmony. ‘People are just going about their daily lives and making the most of their opportunities,’ says Nick.

AFGHANISTAN: HELPING FARMERS TOWARDS SELF SUSTAINABILITY

GHNI’s Project Manager reports: “Oribigud Village was facing water shortages both for irrigation and household use. The line from the mountain spring to the village was broken and the water that ran through the channel was insufficient to reach the village in the fall. However, this water line was just fixed, bringing water to the village.”

Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Somalia: three countries with different histories, culture and geographic locations. One thing they do have in common is the fact that all three of them have experienced conflicts that ruined their economies and forced millions to flee in search of security and a better life.

Afghanistan

Through the generous gift from a donor, GHNI was able to distribute winter food aid to 117 families in the Yakawlang region. The communities in this region experienced a summer drought in 2011 which limited the wheat harvested in the autumn. Each family received 9 liters of cooking oil, 25 kg of rice and 50 kg of flour. The distribution was done with the blessing of the Governor of Yakawlang, with whom GHNI has a very good relationship.

Every day, approximately 1,000 women die in childbirth or from a pregnancy-related complication. Maternal death can occur at any time in pregnancy, but delivery is by far the most dangerous time for both the mother and the baby. The vast majority of these deaths can be prevented if access to emergency obstetric care is ensured.

Solutions to food insecurity do exist

A major food crisis has been hitting the Horn of Africa since the spring of 2011. Thirteen million people face a food emergency triggered by drought and agricultural price shock that emphasize the vulnerability of communities.

Four years from the deadline set to reach the Millennium Development Goals, the first of them – to halve the number of people suffering from hunger in 15 years – is far from its objective. Close to a billion children, women and men, almost as much as in 1990, are still starving.
