Somalia: Humanitarian Bulletin - April 2013, Issued on 10 May 2013

HIGHLIGHTS

  • New study shows that over a quarter of a million people died from food insecurity and famine between late 2010 and early 2012 and underlines the need to heed early warnings.

  • Seasonal rains bring relief, but localized flooding displaces 50,000 people and kills seven.

  • Somalis return home from neighbouring countries albeit at slow pace. About 16,000 people have returned from Kenya in 2013.

The EU's development work in Somalia

Report
European Union

Somalia has suffered two decades of conflict, worsening droughts and heavy flooding.

Militia groups control significant parts of the country, which makes it difficult for aid workers to bring help in these areas.

Whilst a humanitarian response continues to be vital in order to save lives, long term, sustainable solutions are key to addressing Somalia’s endemic political, security and socio-economic challenges.

Crop Prospects and Food Situation No. 1 March 2013

HIGHLIGHTS

  • FAO’s first forecast for world wheat production in 2013 stands at 690 million tonnes, about 28 million tonnes up from 2012 and the second largest crop on record. The increase is expected mostly in Europe, driven by an expansion in area in response to high prices, and in some countries due to an expected recovery in yields from last year’s below-average levels.

  • The international cereal prices in recent months have followed mixed trends with rice prices rising and wheat declining, while maize prices remaining generally steady.

UNICEF Acción Humanitaria para la Infancia 2013

Prefacio del Director Ejecutivo

Acción Humanitaria para la Infancia 2013

A primera vista, Fatima aparentaba tener unos 4 o 5 meses.
