a) Significant Events

A high level of pressure from illegal armed groups on some rural municipalities has resulted in a displacement of people living in the Department of Choco. Last week, two leaders were assassinated.

Around Quibdo, numerous families have been waiting for several weeks for an improvement in safety conditions that would allow them to return home. The presence of guerillas and paramilitaries in the northern rural area of the Department of Antioquia has increased tension and generated fear among the population.

WFP distributed food rations to 4,000 people last week in coordination with Civil Defense and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock as a response to the emergency situation caused by lava and ash emissions from the crater Tungurahua volcano. The food rations were provided through a local contingency fund maintained by the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture.

I was very pleased when I heard we were organizing this event. Central America has been and remains an area of great importance for the United States.
