Peru: Cold Wave - Aug 2013

Disaster description

Starting on 24 Aug 2013, heavy snow occurred in several regions of Peru, mainly in Puno, Cusco, Apurimac, Huancavelica and the Ayacucho highlands. In other regions like Arequipa and Ucayali strong winds occurred while prolonged heavy rains affected the region of Junín. It was the most intense weather event of this type in a decade. By 2 Sep, over 5,200 people had been severely affected, 872 houses were destroyed, and over 26,600 livestock had died. (UNCT, 2 Sep 2013)
