Preparing for the spring floods following heavy snow

It has been the heaviest snowfalls in 30 years, and in the northern parts of Belarus the snow cover reached 70 centimetres earlier this year. The situation worsened in mid-March when cyclone Javier brought new swathes of snow and caused snow drifts, which paralyzed the entire country for 24 hours.

Belarus: Floods Preparedness DREF operation n° MDRBY003

CHF 88,166 has been allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Belarus Red Cross Society in strengthening disaster response preparedness for delivering immediate assistance to some 10,000 people affected by the upcoming spring floods throughout Belarus. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

Belarus: Extreme winter conditions DREF operation (MDRBY002)

CHF 25,631 has been allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Belarus Red Cross Society in delivering immediate assistance to some 5,000 beneficiaries. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

Summary: Freezing weather has already killed four people in Belarus over the past few days, and temperatures are set to drop even further according to weather forecasts.
