For providing support to Cold Wave sufferers across the country, a total of 10,500 pieces of blankets and BDT 6,00,000 had been collected through an appeal to different bank, organizations, industries, and well-off individuals. Moreover, a mutual relationship has been developed within Fund Raising Department of BDRCS and contracted institutions through this humanitarian initiative. However, the challenge was lack of smooth response from the counterpart.

Canada provides blankets to Bangladesh

OTTAWA ―Canada is providing 39,000 blankets to 15,000 families suffering from unprecedented cold weather in Bangladesh through immediate assistance from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), announced the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation. Canada is providing this support through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Coldest winter in 45 years: CARE distributes blankets

This year Bangladesh has experienced its coldest winter in the last forty-five years, with temperatures dropping to two degree Celsius in some areas in the North. The cold wave began sweeping across the country around the middle of December and based on the three-month forecast (December 2012 to February 2013) from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), moderate to severe cold waves will continue through January.

Those who suffer most are the extreme poor, many of whom have no proper shelter and therefore no defense against the cold.

The United States provides $100,000 to assist people affected by the cold wave

DHAKA, JANUARY 15 - The U.S. Government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided $100,000 to assist Bangladeshis affected by the recent cold wave. The USAID-funded Strengthening Household Ability to Respond to Development Opportunities (SHOUHARDO II) implemented by CARE Bangladesh will purchase and distribute 20,000 blankets (two blankets per 10,000 households) in five districts: Dinajpur, Sirajgonj, Pabna, Jamalpur, and Mymensingh.

80 dead as temperature hits record low in Bangladesh

DHAKA, Jan 10, 2013 (AFP) - A cold snap which saw temperatures drop on Thursday to their lowest point in Bangladesh's post-independence history has killed around 80 people, officials said.

The weather office said the lowest temperature was recorded at three degrees Celsius (37.4 Fahrenheit) in the northern town of Syedpur and the Red Crescent said hospitals were packed with patients suffering respiratory illness.
