Both appear to have increased in Central Asia, especially since the last decade due to seismological, geological and socio-economic reasons. Pakistan earthquake: six months after
8 October - 8 April - Six months after the earthquake, reconstruction has begun in countless villages and hamlets. The internally displaced persons are gradually returning to their place of origin.

The relief efforts have been relatively successful. A second wave of deaths was avoided. No massive population movements took place. No epidemics broke out. Kyrgyzstan: Help needed to deal with aftermath of disasters

ANKARA, 24 March (IRIN) - Kyrgyzstan's emergency agency needs assistance to deal with the aftermath of natural disasters that hit the south of the former Soviet republic in one of the harshest winters in the past 20 years, an emergency spokesman said on Thursday.

"We have appealed to many organisations and embassies of various countries for assistance to deal with the consequences of heavy snow and avalanches that struck the south in late January,"

This situation report is based on information received from the office of the UN Resident Coordinator a.i. in Kyrgyzstan, the Permanent Mission of the Kyrgyz Republic in Geneva, and the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC).

1. Heavy snowfalls in January and February 2006 severely affected the regions of Osh and Jalalabat in the south of the Kyrgyz Republic.
