Avalanches continue to affect the mountainous country of Tajikistan after heavy snowfall in early February, and Operation Mercy/CADA is working to bring needed clothing and blankets to trapped villagers.

During the month of February, we contributed three truckloads of clothing and helped 752 families in four districts. (Estimated almost 4,000 people). This aid also helped 144 teenagers in local orphanages.

Tajikistan stricken by heavy snowstorms and avalanches

DUSHANBE, February 21 (Itar-Tass) - Tajikistan estimated damage from snowfalls and avalanches at over three million US dollars, Tass learnt on Monday from First Deputy Minister for Emergencies Abdurakhim Radzhabov who noted that 12 people fell victims of the foul weather that was raging for over two weeks in the republic.

ANKARA, 16 February (IRIN) - The damage caused by a spate of avalanches that hit Tajikistan over the past two weeks is estimated to be around US $3 million, according to the Tajik emergency ministry.

"Based on preliminary estimates, the damage is currently estimated to be some $3 million," Abdurakhim Rajabov, deputy emergency minister, told IRIN from the Tajik capital, Dushanbe, on Wednesday.

Damage from snowfalls in Tajikistan put at 700,000 dollars

DUSHANBE, February 14 (Itar-Tass) - The damage from snowfalls and avalanches in Tajik Pamir and in eastern regions of the republic is put at almost 700,000 dollars, sources from the Tajik Ministry for Emergency Situations told Itar-Tass on Monday.

These are just early figures, as there is still no communication with dozens of small villages, the sources said.

Over 310 residential and administrative buildings, including several schools, have been partially or fully destroyed, ministry sources stressed. Road services fail to cope with snow on highways as avalanches continue.

Government of Tajikistan appeals for help

(New York, 11 February 2005) - The Government of Tajikistan has requested assistance from the United Nations after heavy snowstorms in that country.

Tajikistan: UN warns of further avalanches

ANKARA, 9 February (IRIN) - Warmer temperatures have increased the risk of further avalanches in Tajikistan, where hundreds of snow-slides have occurred over the past 10 days, the UN warned on Wednesday.

"The risk has definitely increased," Ole Ramsing, manager of the United Nations Disaster Risk Management Project (DRMP) in Tajikistan told IRIN from the Tajik capital, Dushanbe, noting some 2,800 people had already been evacuated by the authorities.

Avalanches cut off villages in Tajikistan

The danger of avalanches remains high, and the Tajik Hydro-meteorological Agency said continued heavy snow and fog are likely for 9-11 February in some of the affected regions.
"The problem is that we cannot communicate with many of the areas affected and roads remain blocked. It is very difficult to get an overview of what the needs are and the actual number of people affected," said Ole Ramsing, the manager of the United Nations' Disaster Risk Management Project in Dushanbe, to IRIN News. At least 10 dead in Tajikistan avalanches

DUSHANBE, Feb 7 (AFP) - At least 10 people have been killed in avalanches that have isolated several mountainous regions in eastern Tajikistan, officials in the Central Asian country announced here Monday.

The 10 deaths were in the district of Nurobad around 140 kilometers (87 miles) east of Dushanbe, where another four people were hospitalized in critical conditions, Emergency Situations Minister Mirzo Zieyev said.

The avalanches, triggered after recent heavy snowfall in eastern Tajikistan, destroyed dozens of homes and a school in the region, he added.

Tajikistan: Access to snow-affected areas remains poor

Kyrgyz bus disappears as avalanches pound Central Asia

BISHKEK, Feb 4 (AFP) - A bus carrying at least 11 people has gone missing under a massive avalanche in the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan, officials said on Friday amid a rising death toll from harsh winter conditions in this mountainous region.

The bus disappeared on a remote road in the western Dzhalal-Abad region of this impoverished mountain republic on Tuesday, emergencies ministry spokesman Emil Akhmatov said.
