The remains found were buried immediately in a local cemetery in Goma, capital of the vast central African country's eastern Nord-Kivu province, where the ageing DC-9 crashed on take-off on Tuesday, Red Cross officials said.

The two survivors died Thursday, the head of city's general hospital, Dr Didier Ndabaweje, told AFP.

On Tuesday, a Hewa Bora Airlines DC-9 airplane caught fire shortly after take off and crashed into the commercial district of Birere in the city of Goma in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to the DR Congo Red Cross Society, at least 33 people died and some 115 people were injured. Numbers are still likely to rise. Several local residents from the Birere district are among the victims and are being treated in nearby hospitals.

GOMA, Congo, April 16 (Reuters) - Survivors from a plane crash that killed 40 people in Congo said they had heard an explosion in an engine during takeoff, a U.N. official said on Wednesday.

The Hewa Bora Airways McDonnell Douglas DC-9 aborted its takeoff on Tuesday from Goma in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, then skidded over the runway and down a ravine into a crowded neighbourhood of homes and shops.

North Kivu governor Julien Paluku told Congolese television on Wednesday that 40 people had been confirmed dead so far.

Mr. Ross Mountain, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in the DRC, said that MONUC expressed its 'sadness and sympathy' to the many victims and their families, after the Hewa Bora Airways DC-9 plane crashed into the Birere quarter of Goma in eastern DRC on 15 April 2008.

At the MONUC weekly press conference of 16 April 2008, Mr. Mountain explained that UN peacekeepers and fire personnel arrived at the scene 'within 10 to 15 minutes' of the crash. UN medical staff also helped treat and evacuate the wounded.
