Half a billion people affected by natural disasters in China last year

BEIJING, May 7 (AFP) - Almost half a billion people were affected by natural disasters in China last year, with more than 2,000 dying and some seven million displaced, statistics showed Friday.

According to figures jointly published by the National Statistical Bureau and the National Meteorological Bureau, a massive 490 million people, or a third of the population, were hit by calamities like floods and earthquakes.

It was not clear to what extent they were impacted although 2,259 died, while 7.07 million people were forced

China: Chongqing blowout victims receive 16 million yuan so far

CHONGQING, Jan 5, 2004 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The headquarters for the relief operation for Chongqing gas blowout victims has paid out 16.5 million yuan (2 million US dollars) in compensation to victims, according to sources with the rescue headquarters here Monday.

The headquarters had signed 186 compensation agreements in the last three days with relatives of victims, of which 115 had been paid, said a source.

The death toll of the disaster still stood 243, said an official with the headquarters. All the victims' bodies had been identified, and 234 had been cremated.

CHONGQING, Jan 4, 2004 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The death toll from the gas blowout in Chongqing Municipality, southwest China, has risen to 243 after 10 more severely poisoned victims died in hospital, the rescue headquarters announced Sunday night.

Officials at the headquarters said 396 people were receiving treatment, 27 of them in critical condition.

The Situation

An explosion in an underground gas well on 23 December, located in Gao Qiao town in Chonqing city's Kaixian county in the north eastern part of Chongqing province, resulted in the release of hydrogen sulfide, which is highly toxic when inhaled. The explosion - the worst of its kind in China's history - is thought to be caused by a puncture to the highly pressurised gas well caused by drilling.

Most evacuees return home to China gas disaster area

BEIJING, Dec 30 (AFP) - The vast majority of Chinese farmers who were forced to leave their homes to flee a massive gas blow-out last week had returned Tuesday, state media and officials said.

By late in the day, about 60,000 had already moved back into their homes in the vicinity of the Chuandongbei gas field, near southwest China's Chongqing municipality, the Xinhua news agency reported.

In Gaoqiao township, the area worst affected by the blow-out that killed 234, more than 31,000 had returned, according to a township official.

Villagers return as China gas blast toll reaches 234

BEIJING, Dec 29 (AFP) - Villagers evacuated after a natural gas explosion that killed 234 in southwestern China returned to their homes Monday, as the government scrambled to cool emotions and ensure safe food and water for tens of thousands of locals.

State press reported that an additional 35 bodies were found on Sunday, with most discovered in mountain areas or farmlands where they died while trying to escape the deadly fumes.

The People's Daily said one more hospitalized victim died Monday, while six others receiving treatment were still not out of danger.

More than 9,000 poisoned by China gas blowout

BEIJING, Dec 27 (AFP) - More than 9,000 people have been treated in hospitals for symptoms of sulfurated hydrogen poisoning following a blowout at a southwest China gas field, the latest statistics showed Saturday.

Earlier reports by official media said some 3,000 people had been affected by the deadly fumes released from the Chuandongbei gas field on Tuesday.

The Xinhua news agency, quoting the latest data, said 9,185 people were poisoned to some extent in Kai county, 340 kilometers (210 miles) from the large city of Chongqing.

China: 290-strong gas poisoned people hospitalized in Chongqing

CHONGQING, Dec 26, 2003 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- More than 290 villagers have been hospitalized after they were poisoned after a gas field blowout that killed at least 191 people in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, local doctors and officials said.

Local health bureau officials said most of those poisoned people were children and four of them were still in critical condition.

More than 3,000 local people were reported to have suffered sulfurated hydrogen-caused symptoms like slight conjunctivitis and colds which local medical experts said would not jeopardize their health.
