ETHIOPIA: Poverty linked to terrorism, US congressman says

Fighting poverty is a key weapon in the global war against terrorism, a congressional US aid delegation to Ethiopia said on Thursday. "I think we should be careful in how far we go in saying poverty leads directly to terrorist attacks, but clearly it provides a breeding ground in which terrorist groups can find fertile soil," senior Congressman Jim Kolbe told a press conference in the capital, Addis

Djibouti bars transhipment of Ethiopia-bound power chemical

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - Djibouti's Environment ministry has prohibited both the storage and rail or road transportation through its territory, of chemical imports bound for the Ethiopian Electricity Corporation (EEPCO).
According to Djibouti Port Director Luc Deruvyer, the decision was taken after containers with the chemicals began to leak material considered hazardous to health.

A Djibouti delegation led by the president of that country's Chamber of Commerce and Industry said Tuesday in Addis Ababa that Djibouti port authorities had brought the leak under control

Report
IRIN
NAIROBI, 21 March (IRIN) - A toxic leak in the port of Djibouti is confined to the port area itself and has not become a public health concern, an environmental expert said on Wednesday.
According to the Djibouti news agency (ADI), Professor Albert Nantel, a toxicologist and consultant for the World Health Organisation (WHO), told a news conference that measures had already been taken to evaluate the risk of contamination in the port.

Fears of a widespread environmental and humanitarian crisis rose after 10 containers holding a highly toxic substance,

SUDAN: Khartoum set to sign agreement to end attacks on civilians

The Sudanese government said on Monday that it had accepted an amended proposal from the United States aimed at stopping the targeting of civilians in the country's 19-year civil war. "The new version is addressing the whole issue of protecting civilians instead of focusing only on aerial bombardment," said Ghazi Salah al-Din al-Atabani, the Sudanese presidential peace adviser, in a statement.

Djibouti sets up crisis group to deal with dangerous chemical cargo

DJIBOUTI, Feb 21 (AFP) - The authorities in Djibouti have set up a crisis committee to deal with a cargo of dangerous chemicals that has been docked in Djibouti port since last month, officials told AFP Thursday.

Two-hundred tonnes of copper chomate arsenate (CCA) arrived in late January in the port of the tiny Horn of Africa country from Britain, bound for Ethiopia.

The cargo was immediately blocked by port authorities, because the chemicals were beginning to seep out of their containers, said to be in poor condition.

A UN expert sent to investigate the hazardous

Urgent action needed to avoid environmental disaster in Djibouti

PR 02/16e
Rome, 19 February - Ten leaking shipping containers of a toxic pesticide are creating serious human health and environmental problems in the port of Djibouti, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said today. The present location of the containers is already severely contaminated, according to FAO. The worst affected site is within 400 m of a food aid store.

FAO called for an immediate emergency intervention to avoid further contamination of the port and its workers. "The authorities in Djibouti should not be left alone with this problem,"
