This Review analyzes some of the major events and trends related to natural disasters and humanitarian disaster response in 2011.

2011 was the most expensive year in terms of disaster losses in history, mostly because of a spate of disasters affecting developed countries. Globally, the ecnonomic cost of disasters in 2011 was $380 billion, of which $210 billion were the result of the earthquake and tsunmai in Japan. This was 72 percent higher than the losses in 2005, the second costliest year in history of disaster-related losses.

“I just want to go home,” says Helen, as she stands on the foundation of the home she lived in since 1957. “Home is here. Memories are all I have left and I have plenty of them here.”

302 human impact disasters claimed 29,782 lives; affected 206 million and inflicted record economic damages of $366 billion in 2011

Geneva, 18 January 2012 – For two consecutive years the long-term disasters trend has been bucked by major earthquakes which claimed thousands of lives and affected millions in both 2010 and 2011, according to new statistics published today by CRED and the UN office for disaster risk reduction, UNISDR.

Stamford, Conn., Dec. 27, 2011 – AmeriCares has awarded more than $600,000 in disaster recovery grants to 12 nonprofit organizations in seven states. AmeriCares launched the grant program in August to assist disaster survivors rebounding from massive flooding and one of the worst tornado seasons on record. The program provides grants of up to $100,000 for health-related recovery projects that improve medical care for the uninsured, mental health services, psychosocial support and case management, as well as disaster preparedness.

Situation:

In the first semester of 2011, natural disasters had a devastating impact on human society. Preliminary EM-DAT figures showed the occurrence of 108 natural disasters, which killed over 23 thousand people, affected nearly 44 million others and caused more than US$ 253 billion of economic damages.

Sixty-one countries experienced a natural disaster, with 11 disasters (10%) happening in the Philippines alone. This country was mainly hit by severe floods and storms. However China, suffering from 8 disasters, counted the most people affected by natural disasters (25.9 million or 59%).

TOKYO, September 27, 2011 – The World Bank says Japan’s systematic and careful investments in seismic safety and tsunami preparedness over several decades saved countless lives during the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Speaking at the 5th International Conference on Flood Management (ICFM5), the World Bank’s Sector Director for Sustainable Development in East Asia and Pacific, John Roome, said Japan’s example shows country's should invest in preparedness.
