This report is based on information provided by the UNDAC team in Yap, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).

Situation

1. On Friday 9 April, Typhoon Sudal passed Yap State of Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), causing extensive damage to public and private utilities and food crops in the mainland of Yap, whose population is 8,000. The outlying islands of Ulithi and Fais were also struck by the typhoon.

Micronesia: Relief agency says hundreds still in Yap shelters

HAGATNA, Guam (Pacific Daily News, April 22) -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency has so far brought about 100 people to the region to provide support to typhoon-devastated Yap, an agency official said.

The agency also has sent 20,000 gallons of water to Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia, and 23 flight missions with emergency supplies.

Yap was slammed by Typhoon Sudal on April 9, leaving hundreds homeless and the island's utility system in disarray. A recent damage assessment by the International Red Cross put the number

Micronesia: President Urusemal and Yap leadership meet on typhoon

Palikir, POHNPEI (FSM Information Services): April 16, 2004 - President Joseph J. Urusemal is on Yap for a consultation meeting with the State's leadership in the wake of Typhoon Sudal's destruction during the Easter weekend.

President Urusemal had notified Governor Robert Ruechó of his intent to meet with the leadership to help "facilitate survey assessment and immediate mitigation and recovery activities as may be needed" for coordination of short and long term relief programs.

FSM and Fiji to receive Forum natural disaster funding

The governments of the Federated States of Micronesia and Fiji will each receive payments from the Regional Natural Disaster Relief Fund, administered by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.
Secretary General Greg Urwin says amounts of 11-and-a-half thousand US dollars will be provided to assist with relief efforts, following recent damage from Typhoon Sudel in Yap and the flash floods in Fiji.

Situation

1. On Friday 9 April, Typhoon Sudal passed Yap State of Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) with winds of more than 200 km/hour and waves of more than 10-meters high. The typhoon battered the State, whose population is 12,000, for more than five hours, causing extensive damage to public and private utilities and food crops.

Micronesia's Yap atoll severely damaged by Typhoon Sudal: report

AUCKLAND, April 12 (AFP) - Nearly all the buildings on Yap atoll in Micronesia have been badly damaged or destroyed in a fierce typhoon which hit last week, the Guam Daily News reported Monday.
Typhoon Sudal stormed into Yap, with a population of 8,000, on Friday and links to the Federated States of Micronesia atoll have only been partially restored.

One person died in the typhoon and the homes of more than 1,500 people have been badly damaged, officials said Sunday.

A Yap State official, Tom Lutte, told the Guam Daily News the island was devastated.

Palikir, POHNPEI (FSM Information Services): April 12, 2004 - A State of Emergency has been declared for Yap in the wake of typhoon Sudal's destruction to the State during the Easter weekend.
The Declarations issued by both the Governments of the State of Yap and the Federated States of Micronesia on April 9, states that effects of the typhoon have "cost extensive damages to public and private properties, food crops and private homes... and damages to the coastline areas."

Concern mounting over scale of destruction on romantic Yap

AUCKLAND, April 11 (AFP) - Concern was mounting Sunday over the scale of cyclone destruction wrought by a cyclone to the island of Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).

President orders disaster aid for Micronesia Typhoon response

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The head of the U.S Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that President Bush has ordered federal disaster aid for the Federated States of Micronesia to supplement response efforts for Typhoon Sudal in the state of Yap.

Michael D. Brown, Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response, said the President took the action under a major disaster declaration issued directly after receiving from FEMA Micronesia's expedited request for federal aid.
