HIGHLIGHTS:

 PERU: The current cold wave affected 1,022 people; this is expected to increase over the next months.

Forest fire has adverse ecological and economic effects and is a major concern in many countries. A reliable and timely fire detection and monitoring system is an important part of forest fire management. In view of their large-area repetitive coverage, satellite data are useful for near real-time fire detection, monitoring, and burnt area assessment.

HIGHLIGHTS:

• GUATEMALA: 6,910 people affected by natural disasters in first part of May.

• ECUADOR & MEXICO: Alert for increase in activity in Tungurahua and Popocatepetl Volcanoes.

• COSTA RICA & COLOMBIA: Dengue increase - 6,150 cases in Costa Rica and 664,000 in Colombia.

En los primeros 7 días que han transcurrido del mes de mayo del presente año alrededor de 6 mil 911 personas han resultado afectadas por fuertes vientos, incendios forestales, derrumbes, colapso de techos de viviendas por granizo e inundaciones, emergencias que instituciones que integran el Sistema de la Coordinadora Nacional para la Reducción de Desastres -CONRED-, dieron respuesta a nivel nacional.

HIGHLIGHTS:

• GUATEMALA: 1,520 people affected by rains, 90 evacuated and 70 in shelters.

• ECUADOR: Lack of rain is affecting several regions in Loja, with an estimated 80 per cent in crops losses.

• GUATEMALA: Red alert in the department of Peten for fires, authorities are combating 12 forest fires.

El ministro de Vivienda y Urbanismo, Rodrigo Pérez, inspeccionó la construcción de 30 viviendas para las familias damnificadas de los incendios que afectaron el 14 de febrero a los cerros Placeres y Rodelillo, en Valparaíso; y entregó 19 subsidios de autoconstrucción.

Las casas registran un 30% de avance y son parte de un paquete de soluciones por más de 3 mil 400 millones de pesos para los 260 damnificados, que incluyen, además, la construcción de un nuevo conjunto habitacional para 117 familias, 14 subsidios para comprar viviendas y 10 para reparar los inmuebles.

El Presidente de la República, Sebastián Piñera, comprometió esta tarde toda la ayuda del Gobierno y expresó su solidaridad con las familias afectadas por el incendio declarado en los cerros Mariposa y La Cruz, de la región de Valparaíso, tras constatar en terreno los daños ocasionados, junto al ministro del Interior y Seguridad Pública, Andrés Chadwick, y el general director de Carabineros, Gustavo González, con quienes se trasladó de urgencia en helicóptero desde Santiago antes de iniciar una gira previamente agendada por el sur del país.

Summary: On 6 January, a fire broke out in the village of Alloya, resulting in in the destruction of hundreds of houses and displacing almost 3,000 people, leaving the affected families in a very vulnerable situation without any shelter.
