Beijing implements new meteorological disaster warning signals

On May 10, the new version of Beijing Meteorological Disaster Warning System and Defense Guide is implemented. The new warning system and defense guide improves the warning systems in haze, typhoon, dust and road icing. It adds red warning signal for haze, and PM 2.5 is introduced as one of warning indicators. Meanwhile, typhoon warning system and blue warning signal for dust are added in the new warning systems. Ice rain indicator has also been included in road icing warning system.

The IFRC’s East Asia regional delegation (EARD) serves to support and build capacities within the national societies (NSs) of the East Asia region. The region includes China, Mongolia, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the Republic of Korea, and Japan. The IFRC supports all five national Red Cross Societies in the region and additionally has long-term planning frameworks specifically for the NSs in China, Mongolia, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

CPPCC advisor hopes for unified early warning signals

Yang Xiaohua, member of National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) from Hong Kong hopes to see unified early warning signals of natural disasters among mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

Yang has worked in Beijing in 1980s and traveled a lot between mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. In face of extreme weather, he always felt troublesome because of different warning signals of same weather in these regions.

Natural disasters on Chinese mainland kill 24 in Oct.

BEIJING, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-four people were killed and another six went missing in natural disasters across China last month, official statistics showed on Thursday.

Figures released by the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the National Committee for Disaster Reduction also showed that 2.82 million residents on the Chinese mainland were affected by disasters and 168,000 people were forced to relocate.

Last month, the country was hit by landslides, typhoons and frost.

1.26 mln S China residents affected by Typhoon Son-Tinh

HAIKOU, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Son-Tinh, the 23rd typhoon of the year, has killed one person and left another six missing in south China's Hainan Province, as well as affected over 1.26 million others, local authorities said Thursday.

Rainstorms and heavy winds have forced 52,000 people to relocate thus far, according to the provincial civil affairs bureau.

The wind and rain have damaged 44,700 hectares of farmland and 1,320 houses, as well as caused direct economic losses of 990 million yuan (158.69 million U.S. dollars), the bureau said.

BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Son-Tinh, the 23rd typhoon of the year, wreaked havoc in south China, damaging crops, flattening houses and forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people.

Influenced by the typhoon, the island province of Hainan was pelted by heavy rains to rainstorms, coming along with force nine to ten gales, according to the Hainan Provincial Civil Affairs Bureau.

Typhoon Son-Tinh leaves 1 dead, 5 missing

BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Son-Tinh has left one person dead and another five missing, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said.

The typhoon has also forced around 126,000 people to be relocated in south China's Hainan Province as of 5 p.m. Monday.

Son-Tinh has affected around 1.26 million residents in the province's 11 county-level regions, the ministry said.

Typhoon Son-Tinh brings gales, rains to S China

HAIKOU, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- More than 80,000 people in south China's Hainan Province have been relocated following the arrival of Typhoon Son-Tinh, which has brought gales and downpours to the region since Saturday.

The provincial civil affairs bureau said Sunday that 82,326 people have been moved to temporary shelters, where water, food and medicine have been provided.

Pest damage worsens in rice-producing provinces

CHANGSHA, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Pests are posing an increasing challenge for the country's major rice-producing areas amid an important harvest year, according to agricultural officials.

The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) held a meeting on pest control with officials from the provinces of Hunan, Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangdong and Sichuan, as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on Monday in Changsha, capital of Hunan.

Ye Zhenqin, chief of the ministry's crop farming department, said the provinces are suffering from "unbelievably severe" pest damage.

Five characteristics of typhoons since flood season this year

At 5:15 today, the 14th typhoon Tembin located at Mudan Township, Pingtung County of Taiwan Province. The number of typhoons landing in China in August has exceeded historical extremes so far. Qian Chuanhai, Director of the typhoon and ocean forecast center of CMA, said since the flood season this year, the number of typhoons landing in China is more than normal years. The landing phase is more concentrated and has affected a wider range of areas. Compared to the same period in history, it breaks a number of records.

Landing typhoons in August may hit record

It is reported from CMO that this year’s No. 14 severe typhoon “Tembin” and No. 15 severe tropical storm “Bolaven” may land in China. The number of typhoons landing in China in this August may hit record.

China launches emergency response as typhoons approach

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- An emergency response plan to cope with two approaching typhoons was launched by the National Commission for Disaster Reduction (NCDR) on Wednesday.

The NCDR has urged civil affairs offices in coastal provinces and the three central provinces of Henan, Hubei and Hunan to prepare for typhoons Tembin and Bolaven. Disaster relief material reserve agencies in eight major cities in coastal and central China have also been told to prepare.

NANNING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- More than 700 villagers in Qinzhou, a city in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, have been trapped in their homes by typhoon-triggered flooding, the local government said Saturday.

Typhoon Kai-Tak, the 13th tropical storm of the year, made landfall in the coastal area of Guangdong Province at noon on Friday. The typhoon was expected to make its second landfall in Guangxi on Friday evening or Saturday morning, but has yet to do so.

NANNING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Kai-Tak had affected more than 1.26 million people in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, leaving one dead and two missing, local authorities said Saturday.

As of 4:30 p.m., 1.2615 millon people had been reported affected in 26 counties of six cities, and 68,600 people had been relocated to safe places, said an official of the regional civil affairs bureau.

Flights canceled, alerts upgraded as S China braces for Typhoon Kai-Tak

NANNING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of passengers are stranded at airports after flights were canceled or delayed on Friday as Typhoon Kai-Tak hit coastal regions in south China at noon.

Kai-Tak, the 13th tropical storm of the year, forced an airport in Beihai, a city in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, to cancel four flights linking Hong Kong and Kunming, capital of neighboring Yunnan Province.
