Non-Reimbursable Technical Cooperation for Emergency Assistance due to Hurricane Sandy

The Inter-AmericanDevelopment Bank (IDB) and the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas signed today a Technical Cooperation Agreement at the occasion of the Second Annual IDB Caribbean Governors’ Meeting being held in Kingston, Jamaica.

President Luis Alberto Moreno signed the Agreement on behalf of the IDB and The Honourable Michael Halkitis, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance and The Bahamas Governor for the IDB, signed on behalf of The Bahamas.

PM Signs Exigency Order For Hurricane Sandy Relief

NASSAU, The Bahamas - Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie signed an Exigency Order that will allow residents who have been hard hit by Hurricane Sandy in October to bring in certain goods duty free for a period of three months.

The order came into effect Thursday, November 15, 2012. It is pursuant to the provisions of item 12 of Part B of the Fourth Schedule to the Tariff Act, and Item 5 Part B of the Second Schedule the Excise Act.

Caribbean islands earn hurricane insurance rebate

GENEVA, 15 June 2012 - As the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season kicks off, all 16 member governments of the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) have committed for the sixth year in a row to renew their hurricane and earthquake insurance for 2012-2013 and earned themselves a 25% premium rebate.

PAHO calls for assistance for Bahamas and Turk and Caicos after Hurricane Irene

Bahamas, September 1, 2011 (PAHO/WHO)- The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and The Bahamas and Turk and Caicos health authorities are launching an appeal for international assistance to help 220,000 people, that were affected by Hurricane Irene last week.

The goal of this appeal is to reduce the public health impact of Hurricane Irene on the affected population of these islands.

Situation Report #5 Hurricane Irene impact on Turks and Caicos Islands and The Bahamas (as at 11:00 a.m.) August 30th 2011

Message: Damage Assessments being conducted in severely impacted Family Islands of Acklins, Mayaguana and Cat Island; Turks and Caicos Islands returns to state of normalcy.

Event Hurricane Irene, initially a Category 2 and then a Category 3 storm, passed over the Bahamas from August 23rd to August 26th 2011. Irene passed over almost the entire chain of islands causing significant damage in some islands. Hurricane Irene also passed over the Turks and Caicos Islands on August 24th 2011 as a Category One hurricane resulting in severe flooding.

Summary

After sweeping across the Caribbean affecting Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas, Irene crossed the US as a category 1 hurricane.

Irene continues moving into eastern Canada now with tropical storm force winds.

The Bahamas

Irene was Category 3 as it passed the Bahamas by Friday, affecting all islands to various degrees. To date, no injuries or deaths have been reported, and estimated 362,400 persons live in affected islands.

Una nueva depresión tropical se formó al este del Atlántico y puede transformarse en la tormenta 'José'.

El peligroso huracán "Irene" continúa desplazándose sobre el noroeste de Bahamas y ocasiona inundaciones y cortes en el suministro de energía eléctrica, al tiempo que se ha emitido un alerta de ciclón para Estados Unidos.

"Irene" ha perdido intensidad al bajar sus vientos máximos sostenidos a 185 kilómetros por hora, pero puede cobrar intensidad de nuevo, informó hoy el Centro Nacional de Huracanes (CNH) de Estados Unidos.
