Small island states tackle climate change

Experts from more than 50 small island countries are meeting this week in Mauritius to discuss climate change and food security. The so-called Small Island Developing States are home to more than 50 million people.

The small island nations include Haiti, Fiji, Jamaica and Mauritius, which is hosting the meeting. called Small Island Economies: From Vulnerabilities to Opportunities

Among those taking part is Michael Hailu, director of the Technical Center for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation.

Mauritius farmers, fishermen want compensation

Port Louis, Mauritius (PANA) - The Confederation of Mauritian market gardeners has convened a meeting for Saturday at the University of Mauritius as it seeks compensation from the government following the havoc wreaked by cyclone Dina last week.
The Federation of Mauritian Associations of Fishermen is also demanding financial aid to repair boats and fishing equipment damaged by the cyclone.

Situation

1. Tropical Cyclone Dina passed north of Mauritius on 22 January and was located southeast of Madagascar (27.8S 52.4E) as of 24 January at 8:00AM. Dina is forecast to turn increasingly southeastward and is likely to miss Madagascar and Mozambique, according to a tropical cyclone warning.

Cyclone takes heavy toll in Mauritius

Saint Denis, Reunion (PANA) - Authorities in Mauritius said cyclone "Dina" caused losses estimated at 50 million US dollars in the country.

In a statement, the government described the situation as "serious but not disastrous",

It, therefore, declined to appeal to the international assistance.

Mauritius, like Reunion, recovers with great difficulty from the damages caused by the cyclone.

1. The Cyclone 'Dina' passed as close as 15 km northwest of Mauritius at 04:00 AM on 22 January and at around 16:30 PM moved away from the Island. The Cyclone reached level 7 of the Scale (highest level being 8). The wind gusts were at 206

Cyclone Dina kills five in Mauritius

Saint Denis, Reunion (PANA) - Mauritius was Wednesday recovering from the passage of tropical cyclone Dina, which killed five people and caused considerable damage to houses, telephone and power lines.
Much of the island was deprived of electricity Wednesday, but the National Electricity Company (CEB) said it could restore up to 40 percent of the network in the coming days.

The country was also cut off from the outside world for more than 10 hours, as more than 50,000 telephone lines were seriously damaged.

The cyclone hit Mauritian coasts on Tuesday night at a speed of 206 km/hour.

The centre of the storm spared the island, coming to within 65 km of the island in the early morning, the media reported. Flights cancelled as cyclone approaches Mauritius

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) - South African Airways announced late Monday that it had cancelled all its flights to and from Mauritius due to a cyclone approaching the Indian Ocean island.
The Mauritius Meteorological Services said intense tropical cyclone Dina was 400 km (250 miles) to the east-north-east and moving west-south-west at 15 km per hour.

"Mauritius is currently under cyclone warning class 3. Cyclone Dina is dangerously approaching Mauritius where winds are expected to increase to 110 km per hour during the (Monday) night,"

Mauritius: Cyclone brings heavy rain

JOHANNESBURG, 22 January (IRIN) - The eye of tropical cyclone Dina was expected to miss Mauritius on Tuesday, but residents were advised to remain on full alert after torrential rains flooded homes on the island.
A statement from the Mauritius Meteorological Service was quoted in news reports as saying: "If you compare the position now to a few hours ago, we conclude that it is moving away ... But the storm has a large diameter and the cyclone winds are still influencing the island."

Cyclone "Dina" threatens Mauritius

Dakar, Senegal (PANA) - A warning class three would soon be issued in Mauritius following a severe tropical cyclone "Dina" that represents a direct threat to the Indian Ocean Island nation.
Cyclone Dina is one of the most powerful storms ever during the last 30 years, says a news release received by PANA in Dakar Monday.

A cyclone warning class 2 is presently in force in Mauritius, the dispatch indicated, quoting the country's meteorological services.

1. On 21 January in the early morning, very intense Tropical Cyclone Dina passed some 120 km away from Rodrigues. According to the media, no substantive damage was reported in Rodrigues.

Mauritius Cyclone Daniella Situation Report No.1

1. DHA/UNDP Resident Representative in Port Louis reports the passage, in the afternoon of 8 December, of Cyclone Daniella at 50 km off Mauritius' southwestern coast.

2. Highest gusts recorded at one site were 154 km/h, and the mean rainfall for the island was 300 mm.

3. Three people were killed. Western and southern parts of the island appear to be the most affected.

4. Fifty percent of the island's electricity has been seriously damaged. Reconnection work has started, first in the capital, where sixty percent of power supply has so far been restored.
