Natural calamities caused over 3,000 human deaths in China

BEIJING, Dec 31, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Natural calamities caused 3,155 human deaths in China in 2006, the highest figure since 1998, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

Typhoons, floods, landslides and hailstorms all battered China this year.

"Tropical storm Bilis caused 848 human deaths while typhoon Saomai took 483 lives," said a report from the ministry.

Bilis and Saomai fatalities accounted for 42.2 percent of the total death toll in natural calamities in 2006.

Philippines: Commission allocates €2 M in humanitarian aid for victims of typhoons

Brussels, 29 December 2006. The European Commission has adopted a €2 million emergency decision for the victims of typhoons that have struck the Philippines over the last four months. The aid provided will focus on the provision of drinking water, hygiene promotion and sanitation activities, distribution of non-food items and shelter repair. The funding is channelled through the European Commission Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO), under the responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel.

Philippines: Philip Morris and Red Cross distribute relief in Cam Sur

The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC), together with Philip Morris, conducted a medical mission and relief operations in two areas in Camarines Sur last December 29. 3,000 dead, missing from Philippine disasters in 2006

MANILA, Dec 28, 2006 (AFP) - A series of natural disasters left more than 3,000 people dead or missing in the Philippines this year, the National Disaster Coordinating Council said Thursday.

Four typhoons towards the end of the year and a series of deadly mudslides left at least 1,312 people dead and 1,859 missing and believed dead, the civil defense agency said in its annual report.

The report said 1,158 people were killed and 891 were missing from typhoons Cimarron, Durian, Xangsane and Utor, which all hit the Philippines between October and December.

UN Central Emergency Response Fund commits $241 million to help disaster-hit areas

The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has furnished $241 million to help provide relief to disaster-hit areas in some 30 countries since its establishment nine months ago, the world body's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced today.

Of the total, $164 million was disbursed from the rapid response facility for new or rapidly deteriorating emergencies in 24 countries. An additional $77 million from funds earmarked for under-funded emergencies was distributed across 16 countries. The total sum was used to support 328 projects.

Homeless for the holidays in the Philippines

Tens of thousands of people in the Philippines and Vietnam are spending the holidays in temporary shelters, following a series of deadly typhoons over the past few months, which caused major destruction in South East Asia.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is appealing for emergency funds to assist vulnerable storm survivors in both countries.

In Vietnam, around 200,000 homes were damaged when Typhoon Durian slammed into the Mekong Delta in early December.

As of 23 December 2006, there are still at least 20,466 displaced individuals housed in 67 different evacuation centers in the province of Albay alone. Tropical Cyclone Bondo

Tropical Cyclone Bondo developed into a very powerful storm in the southwestern Indian Ocean. The storm intensity peaked at 110 knots before starting to weaken. By the time Bondo made landfall, it had been down graded to a tropical storm with winds at about 60 knots. Bondo developed on December 18th near Diego Garcia and dissipated on December 26th in the Mozambique Channel.

Madagascar: Children go hungry after floods, drought and Cyclone Bondo

JOHANNESBURG, 27 December (IRIN) - Madagascar has called for international aid to help stem a nutritional emergency that has left thousands of children malnourished in the vulnerable south.

"Madagascar has sent a message, through the president [recently re-elected Marc Ravalomanana], and called on the international community to help us," Anbinintsoa Raveloharison, Director of the National Nutrition Office (ONN) of the Ministry of Health and Family Planning, told IRIN.

Philippines: DILG conducts medical-dental mission for Bicol typhoon victims

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) dispatched to Albay yesterday (Dec. 27) a team of doctors, dentists and nurses from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to conduct a medical-dental mission in the province for the benefit of the victims of typhoons "Reming"and "Seniang."

This DILG mission will also extend aid to BFP personnel who themselves became victims of the onslaught of the two consecutive typhoons.

USA: Rebuilding health infrastructure along the Gulf Coast after Katrina and Rita

Over one year has passed since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck the Gulf Coast, affecting over one million people and resulting in the largest natural disaster in U.S. history. In response, Direct Relief has furnished $31 million in assistance to more than 100 healthcare partners throughout the Gulf Coast, comprised of $26.8 million (wholesale) in medical material aid and $4.24 million in targeted cash grants. This assistance helped people receive critical care in a time of utmost need.

Emergency grant aid for the mudslides and floods disaster caused by typhoon "Reming" in Southern Luzon Island, the Republic of the Philippines

On December 26 (Tue), the Government of Japan decided to provide one million US dollars (111 million yen) in food aid to the Government of the Republic of the Philippines, which suffered massive mudslides and floods disaster caused by a large typhoon hitting the southern Luzon Island from November 30 to December 1. The grant will be contributed to the "Food-for-Work" Program which assists the relief efforts for the people affected by the disaster. Two dead in Madagascar cyclone

ANTANANARIVO, Dec 26, 2006 (AFP) - Two people were killed when a cyclone hit the northern coast of Madagascar on Tuesday, before losing strength as it moved towards the south of the island, meteorological authorities said.

Cyclone Bondo reached the southwestern Menabe region by midday, by which time it had lost much of its initial destructive power, Madagascan weather bulletins reported.

"There was one death in (northwestern) Mahajanga after a wall collapsed and one man was missing presumed dead in (northeastern) Antahala after taking his family out in a canoe,"

Typhoons are not uncommon in the region and most of the communities affected are accustomed to facing them.
