Highlights:

Operations Update No. 11 captures the activities of the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (GEJET) over the past three months.

  • During this reporting period, the second anniversary of the disaster was commemorated. JRCS has completed a number of reconstruction projects, while many early recovery support programmes for displaced people have come to an end.

Two years have passed since Japan’s Tohoku coast was ravaged by a massive earthquake and tsunami. Thousands of lives lost, hundreds of thousands of survivors left without shelter, and millions of dollars in monetary damage were left behind when the ocean waters retreated.

Much has changed in Japan in the past two years, yet much has painfully stayed the same in the tsunami zone. Mercy Corps assisted in the emergent aftermath of the disaster, and has continued to provide support for local small merchants, helping to revive the badly struggling local economies.

On Chernobyl anniversary, UN chief says impact of disaster must never be forgotten

26 April 2013 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today marked the 27th anniversary of the worst nuclear power plant accident in history by stressing that the impact of the Chernobyl disaster must never be forgotten and calling for continued international assistance for the people and regions affected.

Appeal history:

• CHF 95,607 was initially allocated from the Federation’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the national society in responding by delivering assistance.

• The Emergency Appeal was launched on 26 March, 2012 for CHF 1,238,922 for 8 months to assist 13,800 beneficiaries.

• Operations update No 1 was published on 30 May, 2012 to highlight the achievements of the operation then.

Congo Brazzaville explosion, one year on: Land made safe for affected communities

No way to deliver assistance in the event of a nuclear explosion

The ICRC warns that, as things stand, there is no effective way of delivering humanitarian assistance to victims of a nuclear blast. The stark message was given to delegates at an international conference organized by the Norwegian government in Oslo on 4-5 March, to consider the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons. Gregor Malich, an ICRC expert on the operational response to nuclear disasters and similar events, is attending the meeting. He gives the background to the issues and explains what the ICRC is trying to achieve.

Japan: Two Years of Relief

March 4, 2013—From providing accommodations for the homeless to investing in sunflowers.

That’s the broad span of good uses to which UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, has been directing the outpouring of generosity from United Methodists and others of goodwill following Japan’s appalling triple disaster almost exactly two years ago.

Donations amounting to a remarkable $12 million were generated in response to the devastation wreaked by the March 11, 2011, earthquake, and the subsequent massive tsunami and nuclear catastrophe.

Brazzaville : 1er anniversaire des explosions de Mpila, 17 500 sinistrés toujours sans abris

Les habitants de Brazzaville commémorent, ce mardi 4 mars, le premier anniversaire de l’explosion d’un dépôt de munitions au camp du régiment blindé de Mpila. Plus de 300 personnes avaient été tuées dans cette catastrophe, selon le bilan officiel et des fortes déflagrations avaient été ressenties à Kinshasa, de l’autre côté du fleuve. Le président Denis Sassou Nguesso présidera une cérémonie en mémoire des victimes. Un an après les faits, quelque 17.500 personnes sinistrées et sans abris attendent toujours d’être relogées par les autorités.
