Avalanches continue to affect the mountainous country of Tajikistan after heavy snowfall in early February, and Operation Mercy/CADA is working to bring needed clothing and blankets to trapped villagers.

Indian Kashmir seeks central assistance to cope with snow devastation

SRINAGAR, India, March 4 (AFP) - Indian Kashmir has asked New Delhi for 333 million dollars in federal aid to cope with devastation caused by the heaviest snowfall in two decades, a government statement said Friday.

At least 292 people have died in Kashmir since February 7 in avalanches, house collapses and from exposure to sub-zero temperatures, officials say.

Indian army sends out rescue teams in Kashmir amid fears of more snow deaths

SRINAGAR, India, March 3 (AFP) - Indian army teams headed Thursday to Kashmir villages cut off for a month by huge snowdrifts as officials said they feared the death toll from avalanches and cold could exceed the nearly 300 reported.

The army rescue parties, travelling in groups of 10 or 12 people, were struggling on foot through snowdrifts 15 feet (five meters) deep to reach the isolated villages, reeling under the heaviest snow in two decades.

Cut off by avalanches, Kashmir re-connects to rest of India

Srinagar, India (dpa) - A highway connecting Kashmir to the rest of India re-opened Wednesday after two weeks of heavy snowfall and avalanches in which close to 300 people died.

"We have opened the highway for one-way traffic from (winter capital) Jammu to (summer capital) Srinagar. More than 1,400 stranded vehicles, including 400 trucks carrying petrol, diesel, cooking gas and kerosene have reached Srinagar," said Nayeem Akhter, special secretary to the state's chief minister.

India: Kashmir highway cleared of snow to allow supplies to reach Srinagar

SRINAGAR, India, March 1 (AFP) - Food and fuel supplies are expected to arrive in Kashmir's summer capital Tuesday for the first time in almost two weeks after a key highway was cleared of snow, police said.

The highway snakes through rugged Himalayan peaks in the south including the Pir Panjal range which was swept by avalanches that killed more than 250 people in the past two weeks.
