9 million Afghans are in need of humanitarian aid, including basic food and housing

KABUL, Feb 20 (Reuters) - As many as 50 people have died in storms over the past three days in Afghanistan, including 25 shepherds lost in a blizzard, a government disaster management official said on Monday.

Also among the dead were 11 people killed in separate incidents in roof collapses in heavy rain in Kabul province, said Omar Mohammadi, a spokesman for the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Agency.

  • Two incidents of avalanche and landslides happened during the night between 17 and 18 February in district Chitral, killing eight people and injuring others.

  • In Rech valley, an avalanche killed one person and injured three others. In a landslide in Lowari tunnel, 14 people of a SAMBU company got trapped. The army, Chitral Scouts and others rescued seven, while seven others lost their lives.

Countrywide Conflict Displacement

The total number of individuals displaced by conflict in 2016 has risen to 652,690 as joint teams finalise assessments of those displaced last year. In 2017 so far, 15,445 individuals have been verified as displaced, with 18 out of 34 provinces recording some level of forced displacement.

Avalanches across Central Asia have claimed several lives in recent days.

Daler Abdulloev, a spokesman for Tajikistan's Innovative Road Solutions (IRS) company, which helps maintain the country's roadways, told RFE/RL that three workers had been killed by an avalanche on February 19.

Two other people were missing and many roads have been closed due to avalanches in the mountainous country.

(Kabul, 6 February 2017): The UN Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan, Mr. Mark Bowden, was saddened to learn of the loss of life and widespread damage to property in Barg-e-Matal in Nuristan province due to an avalanche.

“On behalf of the UN humanitarian agencies, I wish to extend our condolences to all those families who have lost loved ones as a result of this avalanche,” Mr. Bowden said. “I commend the efforts of the Afghan government that has quickly mobilised to respond to the disaster.”

Continuous heavy rains and snow fall has broken the record of many years caused widespread flooding across 3 districts of Balochistan from 17th to 22nd January 2017, Government declared the emergency in 3 most affected districts and demanded assistance for 60,000 people of affected in Balochistan. The Government also made and official request to PRCS for support of 6,000 families on 30 th January 2017.

Thousands of families in Afghanistan and Pakistan are struggling to survive after heavy snow blanketed large parts of the country, causing avalanches and damaging or destroying many homes.

According to media reports, nearly 120 people have been killed in Afghanistan, where 22 provinces have been hit hard. In the north eastern province of Nooristan, bordering Pakistan, at least 45 people in one village perished under an avalanche. Many people were reported to have been trapped and froze to death in their homes or their cars.

  • Severe weather, including heavy rain and snowfalls, has been affecting the central and northeastern provinces of the country over the past few days, causing snow avalanches.

  • National authorities reported, as of 7 February 7.00 UTC, that the death toll following the snow avalanches on 5-6 February has reached at least 100 people. In addition, 27 people were injured and over 240 houses were damaged in the provinces of Badakhshan, Nuristan, Laghman, Nangarhar, Paktya, Parwan, Bamyan and Dykundi. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing.

SOUTH SUDAN

Between 25 and 31 January, 24,280 people fled to Uganda following clashes around Yei town on 22 January. In Upper Nile, 20,500 people who fled fighting in Wau Shilluk between 25 January and 3 February are in need of shelter, safe drinking water, food and healthcare. On 4 February, five people were killed and 25 injured in a government bombing of an IDP camp in Wau Shilluk. Humanitarian operations were temporarily suspended.
