In this Climate Update, highlights include:

· Between 9 and 11 named Tropical Cyclones were forecast for the 2012 / 2013 South Pacific tropical cyclone season. 3 named Tropical Cyclones have occurred in the South Pacific so far.

· 11 Tropical Depressions have formed in the South Pacific since the beginning of the Tropical Cyclone Season.

· In the South Pacific, one Tropical Depression increased in intensity to Category 3 (Tropical Cyclone Garry) and two to Category 4 (Tropical Cyclone Evan and Freda).

1. Thailand -10 provinces in central and eastern parts of the country are still being hit by floods. As of 2 Oct, More than 188,000 people have been affected.

2. Cambodia - Flash flooding in Banteay Meanchey has killed 13, forced 5,000 families to be evacuated and inundated 41,000 hectares of paddy fields.

3. India - Recent flooding in Assam state killed 18 and forced more than 2 million from their homes. This is the third wave of flooding to affect Assam state this year.

Programme outcome: To increase the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Society (IFRC) capacity to assist National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies reduce the number of deaths, injuries and the impact of disasters through the timely and adequate financial support for disaster response from the DREF.

Programme(s) summary: At 30 June 2010, IFRC had made 73 allocations from the DREF to support 67 different operations for a total of 11,285,280 Swiss francs bringing assistance to over 3.5

Programme summary: The Pacific region experienced both large and small disasters in 2009. In the first two months of the year, Pacific Red Cross national societies responded to flooding in Fiji caused by a tropical depression; flooding caused by sea swells in Papua New Guinea and Kiribati; and devastating bushfires in Australia. Later in the year, teams were mobilized to provide immediate relief and ongoing psychological support to survivors of the sinking of the Princess

Recalling the Statement on Environment in the Pacific issued at PALM 2, the Leaders of Japan and the PIF expressed their renewed commitment to pursue the shared vision of an eco-friendly Pacific. The Leaders of Japan and the PIF then highlighted the vital importance of working together to address and respond to environmental issues including climate change, to support the sustainable development of Pacific island countries and are committed to enhance and deepen cooperation in equal partnership in the form of the Pacific Environment Community (PEC).
