KAMPALA, March 24 (Reuters) - Crop-eating caterpillars known as fall armyworms have started spreading across Uganda, authorities said on Friday, raising fears for the surrounding East Africa region already devastated by drought.

Outbreaks of Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, have been reported in DRC, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland, Ghana and Kenya.
Regionally, around 330,000 hectares of staple crops, especially maize, have been affected. The remaining southern African mainland countries remain at high risk (OCHA 27/02/2017).

Un año de grave sequía y plagas de insectos provocaron que Bolivia, donde existen varios tipos de maíz, haya tenido que importar variedades transgénicas del producto desde Argentina, factores que han causado malestar y una decepción entre los productores bolivianos.

La producción boliviana de maíz en el período 2015-2016 llegó a cerca de 950.000 toneladas y se espera que en las cosechas de invierno (2016) y verano (2016-2017) lleguen solo a 926.000, aún cuando se han cultivado unas 20.000 hectáreas más de terreno.

Santa Cruz, 15 mar (ABI).- El presidente de la Cámara Agropecuaria del Oriente (CAO), Freddy Suárez, dijo el miércoles que se solicitará al Gobierno más recursos económicos para garantizar la continuidad de la lucha contra la plaga de langostas, que afecta a más de 2.000 hectáreas en cuatro municipios de Santa Cruz.

"El sector privado está realizando aportes y se está solicitando al Gobierno un poco más de recursos, porque los recursos que se han asignado se están por acabar", explicó el empresario agroindustrial en conferencia de prensa.
