Mozambique:

Since the beginning of a cholera outbreak in Mozambique in early January 2013, a total of 1,861 cases and 19 deaths have been recorded nationally as at 31 May 2013 (CFR=1%). The outbreak is considered over all provinces except Niassa, although zero cases have been reported there during the past few weeks.

KEY MESSAGES

• Cumulative March to May rainfall amounts were normal to above normal in most of East Africa. In particular, the rains were 200 to 400 percent above average in parts of southern and central Somalia, southeastern Ethiopia, localized areas of central Kenya, and northeastern Tanzania.

 Despite good agricultural production in 2012 and good conditions for pastoralists, the situation in the Sahel remains critical, mostly due to the impact of the 2012 crisis as well as previous recent crises. Approximately 10.3 million people remain food insecure in 2013 and over 1.4 million children are at risk of severe acute malnutrition.

CRS joins global partnership fighting cassava disease in Africa

Catholic Relief Services is joining 18 other international scientific and development organizations in committing to fight the spread of Cassava Brown Streak Disease (CBSD) and Cassava Mosaic Disease (CMD), both major threats to one of Africa’s staple crops.

Cassava is an inexpensive and essential part of the daily diet of many Africans. The effects of these plant diseases are potentially catastrophic, threatenting the food security of 135 million people in East Africa alone, and upward of 300 million cassava consumers across the continent.

Leur taille moyenne est de l'ordre de 800 ha. Le sens de leur déplacement s'effectue suivant la direction du vent et tend souvent à remonter vers le Nord/Nord-Ouest.

Locust Watch: Summer rainfall outlook - July-August-September 2013

There are several seasonal rainfall prediction products estimating the probability that precipitation will be above or below the long-term average during a particular season. Each product employs a slightly different methodology; hence, the results often differ amongst products. A general analysis of the main products is presented for July to September 2013, which corresponds to the summer breeding period for the Desert Locust.

Evaluation des impacts du cyclone Haruna sur les moyens de subsistance, et sur la securité alimentaire et la vulnerabilité des populatons affectées, Avril 2013

Le cyclone tropical HARUNA est entré le 22 février sur la côte Sud-Ouest de Madagascar, dans le district de Morombe, aux alentours de 6 heures du matin heure locale. Classé comme cyclone tropical de catégorie 2, HARUNA a entraîné de fortes pluies et des vents soufflant jusqu’à 167 Km/h avec des rafales à 207 km/h. Après avoir traversé tout le sud de Madagascar, il est sorti le lendemain 23 février à l’extrême Sud-Est, à Taolagnaro à 9 heures du matin heure locale (cf. : carte 1).

The first round of presidential election is currently scheduled to be held on 24 July 2013. No decision yet on whether it will be postponed or not.

  • Namibia:

On 17 May 2013 the President declared a national drought emergency and called for assistance from international community. An estimated 330,925 people have now been classified as food insecure - 14 percent of Namibia's 2,324 million people (total population)
