Climate Prediction Center’s Africa Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET, April 25 – May 1, 2013

1) Poorly distributed and significantly below average seasonal rainfall has resulted in deteriorating ground conditions since January. This has negatively impacted crops and livestock throughout many parts of southern Angola and northern Namibia.

2) Little to no rainfall since the second dekad of March has been received across portions of eastern Angola, and western Zambia. Late season moisture deficits indicate an early departure of the southern Africa monsoon in the region and may affect crops planted late in the season.

Violent storm kills nine in Angola

LUANDA, April 07, 2013 (AFP) - Torrential rains left nine people dead and flooded hundreds of homes in the Angolan capital Luanda, local media reported Sunday.

Four people are still missing after the storm that hit earky Saturday, according to local government spokesman Antonio Resende, quoted by the Angolan news agency Angop.

Landslides also forced the closure of a number of roads.

Rains displace over 200 families in Kamanongue

Luena - At least 239 families have become homeless following the last rains that also destroyed 49 residences in Kamanongue district, eastern Moxico province.

The local administrator, Artur Emanuel Lemos Sapalo, who was speaking to Angop Wednesday, said that the floods destroyed plantation fields and one of the headquarters of the Action Committee of the ruling MPLA party.

Last week, Artur Sapalo voiced concern about ravines that also caused by the rains in the locality, about 52km north of Luena city.

Bridge over Nongola river repaired

Caimbambo - The bridge over Nongola river on Caimbambo/Cayave road, central Benguela province, was restored over the weekend after 15 days stopped, following its collapsing, due to the heavy rains that hit the region, Angop has learnt.

The bridge is about six metres long and three metres wide and collapsed due to the floods on the river.

The works were carried out by a technical team with the Vista Alegre do Cayate firm, Angop was informed.

Heavy rains kill 13 people and injure 15

Menongue - Thirteen people died and 15 were injured in the southern Kuando-Kubango province, following the heavy rains throughout 2012.

This information is part of the balance of the Civil Protection and Fire commission.

According to the source, during the mentioned period, 315 residences were also destroyed.

Fire-fighters install systems of flood warning in tune with SADC

Luanda – The National Civil Protection and Fire Services (SNPCB) will soon increase its flood warning system for Zambeze river in the province of Moxico, in tune with some Southern Africa Community (SADC) countries.

Speaking to ANGOP, in the urban district of Ingombota, in Luanda, the National commander of the SNPCB, António Gimbe, informed that the project will count on the participation of various countries of the region.

Government assists drought hit peasants

Luanda – The Government has reinforced the distribution of seeds, fertilisers and plough to the peasant families under the Unaca-Confederation of Peasants Associations and Agro-Livestock Cooperatives of Angola.

According to a note that reached Angop, other organisations joined the Government in assisting drought and flood stricken families with rice, spaghetti, corn flour, and other goods.

Angola floods kill six: reports

LUANDA, Nov 15, 2012 (AFP) - At least six people have died and hundreds of homes have been damaged amid heavy rains that have drenched Angola since the start of the week, local media reported Thursday.

In the capital Luanda, a four-year-old died when a wall collapsed, Tito Manuel of the civil protection told the state-run Angop agency.

Two of the city's main vehicle arteries were closed to cars due to landslides and mudflows.

Heavy rains dislodge about 600 families in Malanje

Malanje - At least 600 families were left homeless in the Municipalities of Malanje, Quirima and Luquemba, following the destruction of 120 residences, due to the heavy rains over the last three days, Angop has learnt.

This was announced by the spokesman of the fire and civil protection services, Miguel Bernardo, who added that among the destroyed infrastructures are three commercial undertakings, as well as a sanitary tend.Works are in progress to accommodate the mentioned families, says the source.

Over 100 flood victim families get houses

Ondjiva - A total of 114 houses were handed over Wednesday to families affected by the floods in Onahumba neighbourhood, outskirst of Ondjiva city, southern Cunene province, during a ceremony chaired by the provincial governor, António Didalelwa.

The residential area is also equipped with health, education and public safety services to benefit 114 families who were in the sheltering centre number 1 and 2.

Families living in tents get homes in Zango IV

Luanda – One Hundred and nine families who had been living in tents for nearly six years in the Sapu neighbourhood, Bela district, in Luanda, received Saturday their own houses in Zango IV, in Viana district, under the resettlement programme of populations.

The families, mostly coming from Kilamba Kiaxi, had been victim of the rains that ravaged the population living in areas considered at risk in 2005.

Over 100 flood-hit families re-housed

Ondjiva - At least 187 flood victim families in southern Cunene province previously squatting at sheltering centres were on Thursday provided with new houses on the outskirts of the provincial capital, Ondjiva, during a ceremony chaired by the provincial governor, Antonio Didalelwa.

Addressing the occasion, the provincial governor said the drama of hundreds of families affected by floods that hit Cunene in the last four years has come to an end.

According to him, today there is reason for joy and reward after the time they had to await accommodation.

Rain victim families in Cazenga to move to Zango

Cazenga - At least 70 families residing in sheltering field for disaster victims in Cazenga district, Luanda, will be relocated on Friday to Zango III, Viana district.

This is part of information released Thursday by the provincial governor of Luanda, Bento Francisco Bento, during a field visit to the locality, aimed at evaluating the progress and execution of works in progress.
