Morocco to create National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

GENEVA/CAIRO, 28 February 2012 - Morocco is taking steps to join 78 other nations whose governments have created National Platforms for Disaster Risk Reduction to support policies for building resilience to disasters.

"The future National Platform will help the work of all sectors to converge into one common objective, which is to construct a country that is safer for current and future generations," said Mehdi Chalabi, Director of Surveillance and Prevention of Risk at the Department of Environment.

RCA undertaking urgent relief operation in Morocco

The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) is carrying out a massive humanitarian programme to deliver basic food and shelter supplies to population affected by floods that swept some parts of Morocco recently.

The RCA is coordinating with the UAE Embassy in Rabat to ensure delivery of best relief services so as to improve humanitarian conditions of the flood-victims.

A RCA team will leave for Morocco tomorrow to oversee distribution of assistance, purchased from the local market, to the regions most hit by the floods.

RABAT, Nov 30 (Reuters) - At least 30 people have been killed in Morocco after heavy rain and floods, official sources said on Tuesday.

The official MAP news agency said 24 people died when a bus carrying them was swept away by a flooding river in the Atlantic coastal town of Bouznika, south of the capital Rabat.

Summary: CHF 75,652 (USD 72,710 or EUR 56,750) was allocated from the IFRC's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 6 January 2010 to support the Moroccan Red Crescent Society (Moroccan RC) in delivering assistance to some 1,875 beneficiaries.

Maroc : Un milliard 670 millions de dhs pour faire face aux effets des inondations

Le Premier ministre M. Abbas El Fassi a annoncé jeudi que le gouvernement a consacré, en application des Hautes instructions royales, un milliard 670 millions de dhs pour faire face aux répercussions des inondations qu'ont connues certaines régions du Royaume.

M. Five killed as heavy rain, winds lash Morocco

TANGIERS, Morocco - Heavy rains and gale force winds battered parts of Morocco, killing at least five people and flooding large parts of the northern city of Tangiers, local authorities said on Thursday.

Torrential rains lashed the Agadir region, where three people were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in was swept away by flood waters close to the the Tazentout river, officials said.

In Casablanca, western Morocco, two buildings collapsed in the city's old quarter, killing two people and injuring 19, media reports said on Thursday.

Morocco spent over $58mln to mitigate flood impact on agriculture, Minister

Rabat - Morocco has set up programs that cost some 465 million Dirhams (58 million U.S. dollars) to cushion the effects of the floods, which struck the country late 2008 and early 2009, on farming, Agricultural Minister, Aziz Akhannouch said on Tuesday.

Morocco spends $25.5 mln to fight flood effects

Kénitra - Morocco has earmarked 215 million Dirhams (25.5 million Dollars) to finance an action plan aimed to fight the flood effects in the north-western Gharb region, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Aziz Akhannouch said here Wednesday.

Japan grants Morocco $8 mln to ensure protection against floods

Rabat - Japan on Wednesday granted Morocco a total of 51 vehicles worth 71 million Moroccan Dirhams (8 million dollars) to protect the population against floods.

Morocco: Over 10,000 flood victims in Gharb region received assistance, minister

Rabat - Following the torrential rains that hit the north-western region of Gharb-Cherarda-Beni Hssen, authorities have evacuated more than 10,000 victims to 66 host centres, Interior minister, Chakib Benmoussa said.

In a meeting with Representatives of the region, Benmoussa said the authorities also distributed 800 tents, 10,000 blankets, 4,000 mattresses and an important batch of clothes, in addition to 23,000 food kits (500 tons) for 15,000 families in the region, where some 4,000 houses have been totally or partially destroyed.

Morocco: Over 170,000 livestock to b vaccinated in flood-stricken Gharb

Kénitra - A large vaccination campaign targeting some 175,000 livestock heads has been launched in flood-ravaged areas in the Gharb region (North-West), by the veterinary services of the Office Régional de Mise en Valeur du Gharb (regional office for agricultural development in the Gharb) (ORMVAG).
