Humanitarian support for people displaced by violence and threatened by approaching storms

Britain has pledged emergency food, drinking water and shelter to help people displaced in Rakhine State in western Burma.

Minister for International Development Alan Duncan and Foreign Office Minister for South East Asia Hugo Swire today announced a £4.4 million package of humanitarian support for people displaced by violence and facing the additional threats of the rainy season and approaching storms.

  • New study shows that over a quarter of a million people died from food insecurity and famine between late 2010 and early 2012 and underlines the need to heed early warnings.

  • Somalis return home from neighbouring countries albeit at slow pace. About 16,000 people have returned from Kenya in 2013.

Malawi: Floods DREF operation n° MDRMW009 Update

Period covered by this update: 7 February to 3 May 2013.

Summary: CHF 326,090 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 7 February 2013 to support the National Society in delivering assistance to some 16,370 beneficiaries (3,274 households) affected by floods.

With this operations update, a second allocation of CHF 4,603 from the DREF will be made to support a review of the intervention, making the total allocation from the DREF to the operation CHF 330,694.

Championing resilience in Haiti

08/05/2013 – The goal: putting resilience on top of the agenda. The venue to do so: an extremely at-risk country, Haiti. The Political Champions of Resilience, a group established in 2012 with high-ranking officials from leading international institutions – including the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department ECHO, UNDP, OCHA, CARICOM, the UK, USAID, and the World Bank – held a two day meeting on April 20th and 21st to draw increased attention and resources towards disaster resilience.
