Natural disasters in the American continent

In the last decade, the American continent suffered from 922 natural disasters, killing more than 247 thousand people, affecting over 82 million others and causing at least US$ 487 billion of economic damages. The Americas were the second most affected continent by natural disasters, after Asia, in terms of disaster occurrence and people killed. However the Americas took the largest share of economic damages during the decade (46% of worldwide damages).

El monitoreo al desplazamiento y desarrollo de la Tormenta Tropical Nate se mantiene en el océano Atlántico, fenómeno que se ubica a 225 kilómetros de Campeche y a 505 kilómetros de Tuxpan, México, con vientos máximos sostenidos de 100 kilómetros por hora, según la información del Centro Nacional de Huracanes de Estados Unidos –CNH-.

Impacts of Climate Change coming faster and sooner: New science report underlines urgency for governments to seal the deal in Copenhagen

Washington/Nairobi, 24 September 2009 -The pace and scale of climate change may now be outstripping even the most sobering predictions of the last report of the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC).

An analysis of the very latest, peer-reviewed science indicates that many predictions at the upper end of the IPCC's forecasts are becoming ever more likely.

Meanwhile, the newly emerging science points to some events thought likely to occur in longer-term time horizons, as already happening or set to happen far sooner than had previously been thought.

NICARAGUA – FLOODING

Nicaragua declared a red alert due to flooding in the Southern Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAS), on 8 July.

Pueblo Nuevo , El Tortuguero, Sawawas, Muelles de los Bueyes, Mahogany, Tortuga, and Castano are the areas most affected.

A total of 314 persons are in shelters, and seven communities are isolated. Roads in Rio Blanco have been disrupted by the Rio Wawa.
