1 . China - A 5.2M earthquake has struch Yunnan province of China. According to media reports, 30 were injured, 700 homes collapsed and 2,500 homes were damaged.

Disaster Risk Reduction Efforts To Benefit Tens Of Thousands Of Residents In Vanuatu

In this Climate Update, highlights include:

· Between 9 and 11 named Tropical Cyclones were forecast for the 2012 / 2013 South Pacific tropical cyclone season. 3 named Tropical Cyclones have occurred in the South Pacific so far.

· 11 Tropical Depressions have formed in the South Pacific since the beginning of the Tropical Cyclone Season.

· In the South Pacific, one Tropical Depression increased in intensity to Category 3 (Tropical Cyclone Garry) and two to Category 4 (Tropical Cyclone Evan and Freda).

Release of the 2011-12 Annual Review of Aid Effectiveness

The inaugural Annual Review of Aid Effectiveness was released today by Foreign Minister Bob Carr. This new and important document is part of a suite of reforms flowing from the 2011 Independent Review of Aid Effectiveness. Its purpose is to inform Cabinet discussion of the four-year budget strategy outlined in the Comprehensive Aid Policy Framework and report on the aid program’s performance against the Framework.

NATURAL DISASTERS IN 2012

After an intense year of natural disasters in 2011, countries in the Asia-Pacific region welcomed a reduction in the number of events in 2012. OCHA and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters recorded 93 natural disaster events in 2012, in which over 3,200 people were killed and more than 75 million people were affected. China and the Philippines experienced the most disasters in 2012.

Asia-Pacific Region 18 - 24 December, 2012, Natural Disasters and Other Events being monitored by the OCHA Regional Office for the Asia-Pacific

  1. Philippines - TC Bopha (Pablo) struck the southern Philippines about 3 weeks ago. Nearly 834,000 people remain displaced, of whom almost 12,000 are in 43 evacuation centers. The rest are staying outside of the centers. As of 21 Dec, 1,050 people are reported as dead and another 838 are missing. A large international response is underway, in support of the government. Emergency Shelter is the highest priority need.

Tackling Disasters One Rhyme at a Time: Children Prepared for Cyclone Season

An innovative Disaster Risk Management program developed by Caritas Australia has armed some of the most vulnerable people in our region with nursery rhymes and simple actions to minimise the damage in this year’s cyclone season.

The South Pacific cyclone season begins in November which sees our region exposed to more cyclones and floods until April 2013.

  1. Myanmar - The total IDP caseload in Rakhine state is nearly 110,000 people. Violence in Oct caused 89 deaths and 136 injuries. Over 5,300 houses and religious buildings were burned or destroyed. The Gov requested international assistance to support the humanitarian response.

The report is the first of its kind in Australia and is part of CARE’s commitment to transparency, which is important for the 87 per cent of Australian donors who want to know more about how donations are spent.

Pacific’s Biggest Humanitarian Response Forum Begins

(Nadi, Fiji, 22 October 2012): Over 100 humanitarian actors from the Pacific Island region have gathered for the 5th Annual Pacific Humanitarian Team Regional Workshop in Nadi, Fiji.

The Workshop, focused on promoting international, regional and national best practice will build on the lessons learned from a number of humanitarian responses over the last twelve months including the 2011 droughts in Tuvalu and Tokelau, Tropical Cyclone Wilma that hit Vanuatu in March 2012 and the January and February 2012 Fiji floods.

CARE helps the world’s most disaster risk nation prepare for the worst

Humanitarian aid organisation, CARE is helping thousands of people in Vanuatu to protect themselves from the constant threat of natural disasters such as earthquakes and cyclones.

As the world prepares to mark International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) on Saturday, Vanuatu in the South Pacific has today been named the country with the greatest disaster risk worldwide due to its high exposure to natural hazards, climate change and a range of other factors including vulnerable roads and poor erosion protection.

Reports of peace from Afghanistan

Caritas staff Tara D’Sousa and Nick Borthwick recently visited Bamyan province in Afghanistan, where Caritas supports an education and rural development programme. Despite recent violence in northeast Bamyan, Tara and Nick say their biggest impression of the areas they visited (Shaidan Valley and Yakawlang) was one of peacefulness and harmony. ‘People are just going about their daily lives and making the most of their opportunities,’ says Nick.
